Coach: I beg you please either to put 29 with 55, or to explain to us why you won’t. 26 does not look like top line material. 29 does.
This is not a hot take - this request isn’t based on this latest game (in which both deserved to ride the pine, IMO). It comes from observation and analysis of every Jets game this year and last. I observe a marked deterioration in 26’s speed, shot quality, puck-handling in traffic, and reflexive decision-making.
Sure, 29 has his weaknesses - glaring ones - but gawd, he has his strengths. He’s an elite shooter and playmaker. He’s who many of us come to see.
Sure, 26 has his strengths - sparkling ones - but in the end, he’s not finishing plays off like he used to. That a hard thing to dismiss. Reuniting 26 with 18 may spark some old chemistry, & jump-start each other’s game.
Don’t care if it’s 27 or 81 on the other side of 55 - you pick. They seem to be taking turns this year: one looks phenomenal while the other looks lost, then they switch.
