Can anyone point to me who was the last “tough” and big defenseman drafted from the first round who actually panned out? Luke Schenn? He carved out a lengthy career, although relative to his draft position, he’s a major disappointment. Just like Aki Berg.

one of the last pieces to pick up via trade or FA before going on a run. see Robyn Regehr or Willie Mitchell or Matt Green.

Depends on how you define tough, but maybe Jamie Oleksiak and Jared Tinordi from 2011. Can't think of anyone else off the top of my head

If we’re talking about a career of, say 10+ seasons I would look to someone like Brooks Orpik and that’s going back quite a ways. Think he was drafted 2001?

Again, early 2000’s but Dan Hamhuis and Ryan Suter.

Been a long time for sure.

The perfect example of how bad hockey was for awhile.

Doug Zmolek was not only a 1st round pick, but a top 10 pick. The guy handled the puck like he was playing with a 3-wood.
The Zmo!

That is scary that he was a 1st rounder tho. I totally forgot about that

Funny enough, Dean Lombardi was an assistant GM with the North Stars, who selected Zmolek seventh overall in a rather dreadful looking first round.

Jeebus. Didn’t Zmolek get plucked by SJ from Minny in that weird expansion/dispersal when the Sharts entered the league in the early 90’s?

Yep, and Lombardi was with the Sharks when that happened as well. The Sharks would end up trading Zmolek to the Stars years later for Ulf Dahlen.

Scott Parse, Bud Holloway, and Oscar Moller. Three of my absolute favorite Kings prospects.

If there's ever proof no one should ever listen to me, same here. But if it's any consolation, Parse looked okay then got destroyed by bad injuries (hip?), Moller actually has had a very good career in Europe. Holloway was just a weirdo who self-sabotaged with contract demands then fizzled out.

Funny enough someone finally introduced me to a 3-iron the other day. Why haven't I ever used this before, it's basically a hockey stick! Perfect shots all day

Of course now these days I handle the puck like Doug Zmolek so I'm just confirming your post.

Kings forcefed Moller into the line up. He's the kind of kid that needed to come over from Europe at 22-23 instead of Canadian Juniors at 19! He had heart, talent, some skill and was working on becoming very fast. A little on the some side...perfect for todays NHL! Too bad Oscar isn't 21,22

C'mon he wasn't that bad, I say 5-iron.

And also added two goals in a Cup clinching game, but smart guy would trade it all away for Bud Holloway.
And the LA Kings select with their second first rounder(and 17th overall) in the 2006 draft a fourth liner!Good move and the Kings could have had Giroux or Berglund or a number of other players that played first, second line! Instead they got a player that scored a point every 4 games. That's what you would call a waste of a first rounder...you find guys like Lewis in the 4th,5th rounder...this is where Lombardi started to go wrong when he fell in love with drafting Americans instead of the BPA!

Just like when he traded for all those Americans like Stoll, Greene, Williams, Richards, Carter, and Gaborik, amirite?

I don't know why people hurl Trevor Lewis around as an insult. Yeah the 2020 model is a little broken down.

The guy had a great NHL career. If JAD turns out to be Trevor Lewis with a little more offense, we should be so lucky. That's the best kind of depth you can ask for.
Except guys like Lewis can be had for 700 thousand not 2 Million. Will be glad when he moves on and the Kings can insert someone with a little more scoring and playmaking threat. Not just a skater with blinders. He did score the odd once in a blue moon important goal though but other than that I hated him because he was a failed first rounder...better suited for the second or third round! I could have stomached that!
