hey do you remember that team that won the cup in 2012? i remember them going through a strange mid season slump and having a real tough time scoring goals...their name is on the tip of my tongue but i cant quite remember it

We can't score, who needs possession if we can't score. We won the Cup two years ago. Last season we got dominated by every team we played and quick was the reason we got to wcf. I know we always fall back on corsi to make ourselves feel better through terrible stretches. But 26th in scoring, that's the most important stat you have to look at for the Kings struggles. No amount of puck possession is gonna put the puck into the net if no one can score besides Carter.

This stretch is frustrating. Although I think we need a few more pieces (LW couldn't hurt) to get this team's engine going, we have unbelievably bad luck.
on the reverse side of the coin are the ducks, who unbelievably amazing luck. Last time we played against them, puck hits the reverse side of quick's stick and goes in.

Exactly. And while I'm a firm believer in you create your own luck to some extent, what can you say to a team that has lost games with pucks going in off chests or freaking out-of-play netting when opposing goalies have a 97% save percentage to you? No matter how bad our offense may be, things start to equalize. I just hope we don't run out of road to do so. I know I'm a broken record here but I have to stress that using the pace from this slump we'd not only be the worst shooting team in NHL history it would be by a huge order of magnitude the worst.

like i said, i'm not buying the bad luck angle any longer. this team does this every damn year. it isn't a 5 game patch here and there. they fall apart for 20-25% of the season, every season. we aren't talking about a 3-5 game stretch, we are talking about the walking dead on ice for more than a month. there is too much complacency and reliance on stats within the locker room, the media and among fans to address the shortcomings.

Haha. I don't blame anyone at all for feeling that way at this point. Just saying I find solace that opposing goaltenders aren't going to have a 97% save percentage vs. us for the remainder of the year. There are still certainly things to fix regardless, but those numbers start getting better and wins come along with them when the PP looks like an NHL PP, the bounces start landing our way, and posts deflect the puck in instead of away!

It's got nothing to do with our offense being awesome or dynamic or whatever superlative goodness you want to throw out there. It's about regression towards the mean. Unless you truly believe that with these personnel that have proven otherwise throughout their career (including with the same coach and club) we have the worst offense in NHL history by several percentage points, in which case I can't convince you otherwise because you want to ignore an entire field of study/body of evidence.
Its both the personnel and system in my opinion.
I don't believe in that field of study for this team. I've known this team too long to think this is just an anomaly.

And again, don't get me wrong, I'm not blinded by the fancy stats or saying this team is an offensive powerhouse, just that the current stretch/slump of absolute garbage is an aberration in my eyes and in the statistics. They'll regress back to an average/slightly-below-average offense at worst soon.

The Kings are slightly under the league average for scoring chances from "home plate," but slightly above the Kings' average of the last few seasons.
The stat nerds have been trying to quantify the effect of various measures on winning. Corsi and Luck are by far the most influential (Corsi/Possession: 37%, Luck: 38%, Special teams: 15%, Goaltending: 5%, Shooting: 5%).
Some of the Kings Shooting percentage woes are therefore due to fewer shots from prime areas, but Shooting percentage in toto only contributes 5% to winning outcomes (over big samples, of course).

i predicted PIT 5-0 last night, i was close.
this team needs to be torn down and 2012 put on the shelf. there a plenty of good assets in LA, in MAN and prospects in the pipeline so it isn't a total overhaul like 2006.
what PIT showed last night is what Dean MUST do to take this team to the next level. that style of play is what will win you games, titles and championships. CHI plays a similar style and the old DET teams did the same. yes LA won in 2012, but times change. the game continues to get faster, the Kings don't
PIT rely on a speed-skill game, but will play physically when needed to set the tone and gain momentum. as of now LA has no response to a team that plays this way. CHI has made the Kings look foolish now for years.
Dean has to make the moves to acquire and draft players that can fit this style. he needs to move away from the large lumbering forwards to guys with a higher skill set and speed. he needs to stop super sizing at the drive thru.
PIT last night stretched the ice with the LA forwards being unable to even get close to them. they kept making seam or cross ice passes between LA forwards, while the like of Malkin delayed late then came flying from behind with speed. it was a thing of beauty to watch. There aren't many teams like Chicago or Pittsburgh. You can want to be them all you want, but there aren't too many Crosby's, Malkin's, and Kane's out there for the taking.
Which is it? Torn down or not a total overhaul?
If you want to be Pittsburgh or Chicago, it's going to take it being torn down completely, then win a lottery and get a couple top picks in the right years. If it's not a total overhaul, then the Kings will keep being what they've been, because you can't transform a team into something completely different overnight.

Agreed. 2012 was nice but that's well in the rear view now. The sentimental ties to players like Brown and Williams need to be severed, if you aren't producing on the ice and are getting paid handsomely to do so then you're name should be on the block when the team struggles. It appears to me the LA system has been hacked by the rest of the league and it is no longer working, teams again are jumping the dump n chase and the cycle just as they did in the Terry Murray system. This team is in position to pull of a Palffy-like deal where a major talent is brought in but instead of sacrificing just young players the Kings can send off veterans like Stoll, Williams or Brown in the package and free up a spot for Toffoli on the right wing and the Kings could possibly make another Cup run IF they make the playoffs. The team as is is not good. The coaching is not good-they fail to make in game adjustments and once they fall behind nothing changes and they lose. Still cycling, still dumping, still passing to the D on the points even though the Kings do not have a defensmen capable of getting a point shot through and that includes the golden boy Drew Doughty. This team needs multiple trades, this team needs a culture change, this team is not good and will not win lots of games soon.

If you are the GM of another team, would you want to trade for someone getting paid handsomely while not producing on the ice?
This isn't a Smyth situation, where he's on the last year of his deal, and wants to go back to one specific team. A team that wasn't going to be good yet anyway, so who cares if you bring back a guy from the past for a bit.
Brown isn't asking to be dealt. Williams isn't either. Brown can't seem to score outside of southern California this season. His cap hit goes up next year, and he's signed for a while. Who's taking him without giving you their highly paid crap back in return?

SOON=after coaching change and some of these bums who are getting paid millions actually start producing. Could occur sometime between tomorrow and two years from now.
