An interview with Jack Ferreira, one of DL's assistants about how well DL did building this team, their run this year and what the future holds.

http://blog.pe.com/2013/06/07/column-kings-are-a-franchise-built-to-last/

Among other thins he mentions (like the plane rides home with every player wearing ice packs) is that :

“Vey will be in our lineup next year, and Tanner’s not far away,†Ferreira said.

I guess that means Fraser is gone???

I would think so. I said a while back that they would bring Vey up to center the 4th line next season to groom him to take over the 3rd when Stoll's contract is up.

I think Vey and Pearson both have a good chance to make it. Vey is a fun player, if you haven't had a chance to see him, you'll be pleasantly surprised. I have not seen as much of Pearson but a bit and his stock has certainly risen quickly over the past two seasons.

I'd like to see what the Pearson/Vey/Toffoli line can do in the NHL.

I don't know much about Vey, is he another Lewis type of player?

I'm thinking Vey will be groomed to take over the #3 center position once Stoll's deal expires. They'll slowly transition him there as Stoll has two more years left on his contract.

Fraser still has one year remaining on his deal. Buyout in order?

Very nice, quick read.

It feels good to know that as good as we've been, our window is just opening. Others taste the playoffs for a year or two and get the door slammed shut right in their faces quickly. I know anything can happen, but I like our odds of sticking near the top for a while. I like that even though we'll likely have some cup winners leave, we'll bring in some youth and hunger with Toffoli, Vey, Pearson, and some of the other young D and forwards fighting for spots (Forbort, Kozun, etc.). And who knows what happens with our draft picks this year? Who's to say this year's 3rd round pick doesn't just force his way onto the roster?

It's a testament to management--drafting and developing (where many a team goes wrong, imo), trading and signing--that all these things align for our team.

Or he could be the 13th/14th forward in the lineup and the Kings may move one of their many bottom six wingers. With Penner and Richardson being impending free agents, the Kings may look like this (if they make no roster additions):

Brown-Kopitar-Williams
Pearson-Carter-Toffoli
Clifford-Richards-Vey
King-Stoll-Lewis

Scratches: Nolan, Fraser

Vey can play RW, so he may start on the wing until room opens up for him to play C. Maybe he can be a Briere like forward who can play C or RW in a pinch. Least here's hoping he will be that type of dynamic playmaking forward.

I'm excited to see both. I feel like I don't get to see our prospects as frequently as the others. Grr!

Ziggy, so you don't think Penner will return?

I also think Richardson is a better option than Fraser, but it'll be tough to maneuver that.

I'm personally indifferent on Penner. I like what he brings to the table when he's on the game, but we only get to see that occasionally and he consistently struggles to generate offense throughout the course of a season. I think he's been given plenty of opportunities to do something, but he's constantly disappointed us. With that said, he has been the Kings' 2nd/3rd best winger during the playoffs (after Williams and Toffoli is right up there as well).

I like it, probably gives us some breathing room for the cap and also means we will get prospects and picks for Bernie.

I would never get rid of Fraser. He isn't exactly breaking the bank and he's an important depth player with playoff experience. $825,000 is nothing.

We all like what Carter has done at the center position, so down the middle that is outstanding. That lineup is still really light on LW though and I think Dean will do something to address that in the offseason.

Got center depth?

That second line gave me a chubby. Talk about an offensive powerhouse.

Trade Stoll. Free up money to invest in a Top LW. Roll 11,77,10 down the middle. Repeat if necessary.

Would be similar to Johnson trade: address a weakness by trading from strength.

No reason to ditch Fraser at that salary.

Hopefully get a high pick or good prospect for Bernier. Going to need these ELC players when it comes time to re-up some guys.

If Vey is in the line up as a center then its going to be interesting.
Moving Vey to LW would be a mistake.

Vey *can* play RW but it isn't his natural position. If that was our intention we should have had him playing RW this past year in MCH and I have to think that would be the case if we indeed plan on him playing RW. I have to think we want him up the middle.

It also means that Carter goes back to win on MR's line.

Kopi
MR
LV
Stoll

Vey isn't a 4rth line player so it is going to be interesting to see how we make it work. Moving Stoll makes the most sense if we are going to have LV at C. Put TL as the 4rth line center?

Brown/Kopitar/Williams
xxxxx/MR/Carter
Clifford/Vey/Tofoli
King/Lewis/Nolan
Fraser?

Interesting stuff indeed. If Pearson is our answer to second line LW it will be a young team.

I think Carter has shown that he can be a top line quality center with the way he's played when put in that position, and I think he could do just fine with two youths in Pearson and Toffoli as his wingers.

As much as the top line has struggled during the playoffs, let's not forget that this line has been together the past two seasons and have been fairly consistent performs up until this time (which goes along with the theory that they're playing hurt).

I would also keep the Stoll line with King and Lewis intact. Although they may not always produce, Stoll's line can be monsters on the fore check and I think they could bounce back in 2013-14.

While it would appear that Richards is centering a third line, I would treat it as the 2nd line. The lines centered by Kopitar and Carter would be 1A and 1B, then you have Richards on line 2 and Stoll on line 3. Richards is an all-around center who can shut down whoever he is matched up against and also produce.

Although Clifford isn't exactly a top six quality LW, I think he can bring a physical dimension to the line and could add some net presence to go along with Richards and Vey.

This alignment gives the Kings an insane amount of depth from top to bottom.

I love Carter up the middle and if we have him as our 2nd C it only makes us a ton deeper. MR as a 3rd line C? Holy cow that is an amazing idea and would let us role 3 great lines. Two BIG centers and then all heck breaks loose with MR coming at you.

I agree that he could do great with TP and TT on his wings if needed. I haven't seen many people talk about touching the top line. It looks like a winner to me.

All the line ups could work for us without a doubt. I question bringing Vey up next year especially if we plan on him playing RW. He can do it but he isn't anywhere near the same type of player/producer as he is when he plays C. He is a great young C who can become a legitimate 2nd in this league in a couple of years. Playing him on the wing is playing him our of position but if it can't be helped then we will see how it goes.

Clifford is Clifford and wherever we put him he will play fine. I wouldn't put him in our top 6 either and hopefully he doesn't end up there but he is solid. Don't know who thinks otherwise but I agree.

If we are bringing Vey up as a C which would be in his best interest and maybe ours too then someone has to move positions and or be dealt to make room.

If Vey plays C then I have to believe that Fraser is gone and that leaves us with 5C which isn't a terrible thing. Vey can get worked into the line up by seeing sheltered minutes to start the season and if all goes well we can set him up on the wing and give him a few minutes at C here and there.

Then after next season move Stoll for Vey.

Next season

Brown/Kopi/Williams
Pearson/Carter/Toffoli
Clifford/MR/Nolan/Vey (either way)
King/Stoll/Lewis
Fraser rides the bench.

Richardson gets waived or moved for futures. Alright, sounds good to me. Pearson is being rushed a little but he will be fine and Vey shouldn't be started out on the wing but if that happens he will do fine until we move him to C I guess.

Following season we have Andy Andy and Nick Shore to integrate (if Andy doesn't make the team this season moving one of our bottom 6ers).

interesting.

I believe that Andy Andy, vey, and maybe Kozun make it next year. It's not hard to imagine. Andy is ready, Kozun has served his time so he will get a good look. Vey is the most talented, we don't need Fraser.

Package him off with Bernier.
