Quick and Bernier were under the last director of scouting (Murray) and Jones does look good, but obviously it is a very short sample.

I'm concerned that Futa has drafted four goalies and none have come close to even being regular AHLers yet, nevermind NHLers.

Well, development time, and who are they going to displace? They had Quick, Bernier, and undrafted Jones ahead of them (and Zatkoff at one point).

Who are the four:
Bartosak, 2013--too soon, but he looks like a gem, imho.
Gibson, 2011--blecch.
Berube, 2009--Think he's well on his way. Will certainly be an AHL-starting consideration next year. But he's the one I was thinking about with a ton of organizational roadblocks.
Rowat, 2007--low draft pick, not much of pain there.

I don't fully disagree, I just think it's a longer-term picture than some other positions. And if anything, Gibson is the only worrying one, as he was a high-ish pick; the others were mostly just late-round swings (Berube mid-round).

I think Berube and Bartosak will look real good with our development and systems, but there really hasn't been an organizational need at goaltender for Futa and co. to hit homeruns. You may be onto something, and that's the philosophies they have for other positions maybe don't necessarily translate to their goalie drafting, but I think it's more of a situations deal than anything.

Think we'll be taking a goalie high-ish in this draft?

When you say 'who are they going to displace' the team obviously felt someone, or they wouldn't have selected them.

If there wasn't a need, Futa et al. wouldn't have been picking goalies. I think the plan was to have Jones in as Quick's backup and have Berube starting in the AHL with Gibson starting in the AHL.

The only reason any of that is actually happening at the minute (minus Gibson) is because of Quick's injury. Yes, Jones looks amazing, but he has not gone according to plan IMO and if not for Quick's groin finally no longer acting like flubber, we were forced to turn to him. He's done great in four games, but it's four games and was not the plan this season. The fact we got Scrivens in the Bernier deal speaks volumes about how high the Kings were on Jones entering the season.

Berube was an AHL backup after two less than stellar ECHL seasons, and is only starting now because Jones was recalled. Gibson collasally bombed. Bartosak, way to early.

We are fortunate in that we haven't had to replace anyone internally yet.

Touche. I guess I just mean there are only so many organizational slots for goaltenders but I think you're right in that you're not drafting a guy just to fill an ECHL/AHL slot, you're hoping he cracks the NHL. I just think the only draft spot of note that was clearly wasted on a goaltender was the Gibson pick. The others are either too early to evaluate (Bartosak), still in development due to organizational depth at the position (Berube), or really just an insignificant pick (Rowat).

This thread is comedy

No kidding.

Misses a chunk of the season due to mono, and he's a bust 6 months after being drafted because he's struggling to score?

I'm not saying he's going to be a force, but I do think he can be afforded a little bit more time before jumping to conclusions.

Wasn't the year Gibson was drafted the same year that Berube missed a lot of time with hip surgery and then some smaller injuries? I think that may have factored into the decision the same way that taking Bartosak was in response to the Kings deciding not to sign Gibson (who hasn't looked out of place in the couple games he's gotten in the AHL.)

Gibson looked like his attitude went sour once he realized he isn't making progress(fast enough).

Looked the same for Shumacher. Kings are big on drive and having the right attitude.

I lost all hope in Gibson when I saw him meltdown at the WJC. He has no mental game and evidently the Kings saw that he was not developing. Least the Kings scored a big one in Martin Jones.

Yep, I could be overreacting/evaluating. It is a small sample size (four goalies) but to me it is a bit worrisome. We do need to add a goalie into the system to have whether as insurance in case of injury or in case Jones starts to suck or in case Jones pulls a Bernier and goes off to be a starter elsewhere. Not at critical mass yet by any stretch, but it'd be nice to see Berube or Bartosak take a big step forward this season.

He'll go to the minors and play with Manchester for 3 years before the kings even think about calling him up. They hope he turns into Tim Kerr, or Dave Andreychuk.

Berube might be doing that right now and I think it's getting overshadowed a bit due to Jones' run over the same period. Berube has put together a very good stretch of games in Manchester with Jones in LA. He went from a guy they seemed nervous about playing to a guy that I'd be comfortable with as the 1B once Jones is back. I agree they need to add another goalie but I'm thinking it should be a younger player to let either develop in juniors for a couple years or college. I think Niederberger may be the insurance policy if Bartosak falls apart. He was either the last guy Hextall signed or the first one Blake signed and still has a year left on his Monarchs AHL deal. You don't often see guys sign AHL deals longer than a year unless there is some sort of a plan for that guy. Wow this threads gone off topic...

You must not read my posts ever because Berube HAS taken a huge step forward and I've been saying it for a little while now. Kid is going to be good. Believe it. So awesome.

Its very possible neither guy signed Niederberger. Blake isn't actually a GM in the sense you think of a GM for the Monarchs. He hasn't signed any of the guys in here on PTOs. That is done by Hubie McDonagh. He could've been the one signing Mathias because he's on an AHL only deal.

Just because someone doesn't agree with your posts doesn't mean they don't read them.

Berube is a 3rd year pro and is just now playing in the AHL. Good numbers? Sure, but we are talking 16 AHL games this season and 21 in total in his three year career. And a good chunk of those this year are only because Jones got recalled. If he keeps this up for 40+ games, I'll buy in. Way to small of a sample size at the AHL level to even get my hopes up right now.

Perhaps "bust" wasn't the right word. Although, he is looking like the "bust" on the 2012 draft class at this point. All the 2012 picks seem to be performing well except Auger. Zac Leslie playing D for the same time had more points in two games than Auger has had all season (just saying).
