If Kovalchuk was a 2-year deal his market would be a lot higher. It's that extra year that is killing him because he actually looks like a guy that could help teams. If he were a rental, teams would probably be jumping all over themselves to get him for a run.

It'll probably neither of them if they're that good(the Kings aren't trading a 26 year old Quick), and a lottery protected 1st, if not a 1st in 2020 outright. If there's a 1st involved at all.

Columbus isn't the only desperate team here. Petersen has to be re-signed. They don't want to lose Campbell on waivers. The Kings are in a bit of a bind too.

Look, Muzzin brought back 3 players, 2 B grade prospects and a late first, with no salary retained. It’s not apples to apples between goalie and D and TML and CLB. But, I’d argue you’re undervaluing JQ if you think he’s hardly worth a 2020 1st and scraps. I also think you under appreciate the bind CLB would be in next season if they trade Bob and now have to find a goalie to backup unproven Korpisalo. JQ is arguably their best hedge available.

Yup, that third year almost forces you into retaining salary to do a deal worth making. I think they’ll have to retain around 25%, which is around $1.6 million. Given we stop paying Greene this year and a chunk of Richards money next year, I think it’s affordable. But at least we got cups for the other guys. Kovy has been a disaster. We’ll be lucky to get a project like Josh Ho-Sang back for him.

?? 25 points in 42 games, on a crap team, 3 years removed from the NHL and you think he's been a disaster??? I dunno about that, he's opened up plenty of eyes, and there is a reason why teams are interested in him.

Martinez can be a solid defenseman, as can Muzzin, but let's not get nuts.

I totally agree with all that, Blake just has to be ready. GM's have done a lot of things far stupider than giving up a first+ for a guy like Martinez at the deadline. Martinez would be extremely effective in a spot that emphasizes transition play and more active defense.

Yea, but holy hell man you think our defense is bad now,

Doughty - Forbort
Fantenberg - Walker
Phaneuf - LaDue

I guess lol but man, that's ouch, but you do have to let the kids play,

Curious if moving IK will have any impact on signing Prokhorkin? I've never been overly confident that Pork's even wants to come play in NA, kind of I'd believe it when I see it. But maybe he'd be more open with IK in LA than if he wasn't.
Not that you do or don't make deals based on that. Curious to see it play out.

Not only this, but Blake would be doing his job by making it that much tougher for this disappointing core to win games this season. Add Kovalchuk and Quick to the list of guys moved and Blake will have really done some good for the future of this organization. Doughty has already stated publicly he is on board for whatever happens. Who cares about what Kopitar thinks.

Honestly, if this guy doesn't see an opportunity with the Kings at this point, then:

I could see the Islanders being a fit for Kovalchuk. They could fit his cap hit and maybe could view him as somebody who could help their 26th ranked PP. They have some reclamation project prospects like Dal Colle and Ho-Sang who they will need to make decisions on by next fall.

Ho-Sang seems like the kind of prospect that would come back in a trade from anyone that acquires Kovalchuk. We won't get a 1st rounder or a solid guy without warts. I just hope it's not just a salary dump. Maybe a 2nd rounder and a bridge guy could come back in return. The Kings are going to need some bodies if they more more guys.

It's sure going to be awful, but to be fair, NONE of those guys are kids. Walker is the youngest and he's 24, maybe has a couple more years of development. LaDue and Fantenberg are what they are, sink or swim. Maybe they prove we need to keep them, or they prove that they're just bridges for the real kids. That D score SUCKS HARD but i have no worries of 'ruining' anyone on it. It's shit or get off the pot time for every one of those guys but Walker and even he has to show some immense development in his brain on his side of the red line to make me believe he's anything but tweener D fodder.

pretty much. He's not going anywhere, but it's time to treat him like SJ treats Thornton--you're here, you're a big part of this franchise history, but it's time to transition to others to carry the offense.

Fair enough, out of that group of six, the only one I would keep would be Walker....I mean Doughty is a given, Forbort, you keep unless you can get a solid haul for him, but you have to put him in the right hole, #2 D isn't the right hole.

I would have been much more amenable to treating Kopitar like Thornton, had he signed contracts like those signed by Thornton.

This is WHY at least 2 of: Clague, Brickley, Strand, Durzi, Mikey Anderson, Markus Phillips MUST ARISE. as in LEGIT TOP 4 DEFENSEMEN. "There is no try - only do" YODA.

I hope they sign Anderson and Phillips. And start moving out the Reddekopps and Lintus must be moved on. Maybe Matt Roy can be decent. Apparently, he's going to get a callup look this season. This draft is not deep with top end D. If the #1 falls below #5 overall, maybe they should take Byram.

I don't particularly care given Thornton is 9 years older than Kopitar and earned those pay cuts by being a ghost for a decade. Those contracts only gave the illusion of flexibility because they still had to plan around him. I'm sure by exchange rate that a 36 year old Kopitar at 10 million in 2024 will be equivalent to a 36 year old Thornton averaging about 7 million in 2016. Or, 39 year old Thornton is making only 2 million less than Kopitar, and somehow that isn't throwing off the Sharks altogether, which actually should be a really good example of how Kopitar can still age with this team.

My only point is that other guys start to transition to the forefront, which is hardly profound or new given that's what everyone is advocating. I'd like to think that Kupari, this year's 1st, even JAD can become guys like Meier, Hertl, et. al.

From today’s 31 Thoughts (which supports what The Mayor reported yesterday):

Panarin’s decision sent shockwaves through the Blue Jackets. Columbus lost three straight in regulation after agent Dan Milstein’s announcement. A couple days off before a Colorado/Arizona/Vegas trip gives them a chance to breathe and re-set. Trading either player for something that can’t help them now isn’t an option. Doug MacLean was saying last week that he’d trade both players, and, if the assets were futures, flip them for immediate, impactful help. I think GM Jarmo Kekalainen is considering just that. If the Blue Jackets do deal Bobrovsky (and remember, the goalie has control of the situation), do not be surprised if they take a run at Jonathan Quick.

Buffalo is like Montreal. The Sabres do not want to use their best assets on rentals. I could see them looking at someone like Carl Hagelin. He’d be a good fit.

I’ll take all the trade talk with a grain of salt.

Most of it is likely educated speculation but speculation nonetheless.

Columbus will also have somewhere between 16 and 18 mil in cap space to play with, with only really Ryan Murray to sign, theyll have plenty of money to sign a back up goalie if they cant trade for quick

I don't see how Quick has much trade value if any.

Regardless, if we're dealing with CBJ I want Emil Bemstrom.

Neither do I. I don't think he's available no matter what the blogger bros say. They're not trading him for a 2nd. My guess would be Campbell is moved at the draft, Quick / Petersen until the Seattle draft and go from there.
