KHL Expansion Part IX

Mikhail Degtyarev, Minister of sport & President of the Russian Olympic Committee: #KHL has begun contacts with the Hungarian Ice Hockey Federation
Even a halfway competitive Hungary-based KHL team would require at least withdrawing Fehérvár AV19 from ICEHL (especially since their arena seems like the only venue in the country relatively suitable for the KHL) and greatly improving their roster (as it's hard to imagine a middle-of-the-pack team from Austrian championship being anything but a bottom feeder in the KHL).
Maybe a full Hungarian national team would be more interesting for the K and more beneficial for the Hungarian hockey (which would also justify KHL team's massive operational costs).

As for Fehérvár AV19 - their arena for 5500 seats is not suitable for KHL. Morozov recently said the minimal criteria for arena of a new team will be upgraded to 10000 seats. If there is Hungarian KHL team, it will be located in Budapest. No other city.

As for this news, they can talk about KHL World Games ....

Laszlo Papp Arena is below 10000 seats as well :dunno: Maybe you're right that the Hungarian KHL team should play in Budapest (though Székesfehérvár is basically a bicycle ride from the capital).

The problem is, as far as I understand, that Hungary already has a club that is more or less a base for the national team; just moving it from one foreign league to another one seems like a much easier transition than other options (merging several Budapest teams, creating yet another Budapest team or moving some other club to Budapest would be both unpopular and near-sighted, as already small and weak Hungarian league would get exsanguinated even more).

What vision would you have for a Hungarian KHL team?

I just posted what Degtyarev said, nothing more behind it. But yeah, it makes sense.

There is also MVM Dome in Budapest. I do not know if the arena has ice surface, but Hungary will host Canada there before IIHF Worlds.

If there is KHL team in Hungary, it will likely be a new entity.
