Kevyn Adams GM thread

I despise the premise that Ruff having input is a good thing. Not from a perspective of a coach having input, but from the implication that he, and as a corollary Adams are not being jettisoned. New GM will want their own guy and that doesn’t seem to be on the table.

Yeah every media member has gotten around to “if it was my team I would make a change…but it isn’t going to happen so… “

Weak sauce.

No one has the nuts to destroy them despite having five full years of things to destroy them for. Use your platform to make it unavoidable.

It is perfectly acceptable to be upset at the way the team is covered right now. Because the guys that think they’re being tough are pathetic. And then they’ll lecture you about what journalism is. As if it’s recapping box scores, typing out post game quotes, and criticing hobbyists who put in more work than you while you don’t dare rock the boat in a way that could cost you the limited access they already provide. Soft coverage. Soft team. Soft management.
You overestimate the power that the media has to influence Terry Pegula.

It has nothing to do with the power of the media to influence. It is an observation that those reporting on the the organization do not believe there is the slightest chance the FO will get the overhaul it needs. That is depressing.

Is Ruff a better talent evaluator than coach at this point? I feel like he’d be better suited for a job upstairs…and may actually be quite good at it.

Not sure how good of a coach he is these days…sure seems like he lost a step
This is actually the only way I see it going if there IS a change. KA moves to POHO and acts as a buffer between Pegs and the GM because Pegs likes and trusts him. Ruff moves to the GM role because he has the respect of Pegs. If Ruff is actually good at bring a GM, maybe he gets more autonomy with KA acting as the buffer.

Not saying it would be successful, but I see that as the only remotely likely change.

I can’t see Pegs adding layers and the cost associated with them. I believe he believes nothing is wrong that time will not heal.

Stupid f***ing “sit on my hands during a 13 game losing streak” cost them the playoffs. Fire this dumbass.

Between the Eichel trade (Nov 2021) and the Mittelstadt trade (March 2024), Adams made one acquisition of note, Jordan Greenway.

Thats two full offseasons of hand sitting.

Despite having a full compliment of cap space and draft picks....nothing was done for 2.5 seasons.

For a team whose crowning glory was finishing 1 pt outside of the playoffs (because they went on a tear much like this year, when it was essentially already over)

Adams swears up and down and left and right that he has the full support of ownership to spend whatever is necessary.

Yet, they didn't. In 2021-22 and 22-23, they added dead cap to get to the floor.

In 2023-24 they finished the year with 10M in unspent cap space. And this year, the 'no stone unturned' year, they will finish the year with around 8M in cap space.

Adams built a mentally (and physically) frail team. They received little support from the coaching staff, training staff, or front office. Even if they had picked up a few wins during that 13 game streak, this team would have collaposed when the pressure was on during the end of the regular season. The staple of the Adams team is them performing like rockstars when there is no actual pressure and crumbling when there is any amount of pressure.

The 13 game losing streak was the fatal blow, sure. But....this team was dead man walking going into this year. Their top players have all had great years, Dahlin, Thompson, Tuch, Zucker, Peterka. Quinn and Cozens struggled, sure. UPL hasn't been great. Byram and Power have been OK. Overall though, if your big players do well, typically, your team will succeed.

The fact that the big names have all done well and its taken a 6 game winning streak to get close to .500 as the season ends....this is just a poorly built team that cannot handle a shred of adversity or pressure. They can only play downhill.

Edit: I realized this post turned into more of a rant than an actual reply. My point was:

You don't fire him because the team lost 13 games. You fire him because a built a team that its not shocking or surprising they lost 13 games.

This stretch is because the sabres, despite getting outplayed like usual, are being dragged by an old goalie who was waived by this GM earlier this year and spent a couple months with another team

There was never a plan, everything that happened this season good and bad was an accident

That sums up Adams' tenure - it's all just happenstance.

I don't even think he isn't free to spend. He just think he is smarter than everyone else with all his experiments.
From fielding one of the youngest teams season after season to his random hording of certain types of players, not to mention his goalie saga and Minur league talent obesity.

Wasting the prime of Dahlin &Thompson until they are fed up like the previous core.
Thank you for ruining my joy for this franchise which even previous regimes couldn't kill.
I didn't miss a game till 23/24 and the last 2 seasons tuned in to maybe 5 not finishing a single one.

f*** Kevyn f*** you Terry
