Oh, that's Guenin. He's special.

I keep seeing goals being scored on this pylon, then I always ask myself who the **** that guy is then you Avs fan remind me this defensive wreck is Guenin...wasn't him playing only 32 games in his first 6 seasons (on 4 different teams nonetheless) enough of a sign for the Avs

:( This is painful, moreso because Hayes signing came down to Avs and Rangers.

Already a complete 200 ft player with exceptional puck-holding ability, vision and passing awareness. Skating is a bit choppy, though that isn't that huge of a concern. Mini-Thornton.

Too bad Jimmy couldn't convince him of coming down here.

He's such a pass first player I susoect everyone was expecting a pass. Still not good defense!

6'5" 225 lbs....he is great at puck possession.
Excellent signing by Sather.

He's NYC's GM.... players literally beg him to sign there. Now if he was the Winnipeg GM or Edmonton one, and getting top UFA's to sign, then I would be giving him credit.

I always thought that the best defensive strategy was to let the other team gain as much speed as possible through the center of the ice, not challenge them at the blueline, and watch them cut in front of the net. Most importantly, don't touch them as they do so. Try to stay as not-physical as possible.

Turns out that actually is the wrong strategy?

Yes and no...it's a fun place to live for young players but it's also expensive (taxes) and there have definitely been a few guys who were daunted by the idea of living around Manhattan.

Being a good team with a lot of money probably is the biggest draw though, especially the money part

I don't see where the highlight reel-ness is. He skated the length of the ice without being touched, it's not like he pulled off some crazy deke or anything. This is like Engellend's goal from earlier in the year where he skated in alone on the goalie without being touched.

As much as I'm loving Hayes this season and it being a good goal - I agree. This is a clip more about a defensive coverage fail highlight.

That looks like a bad goal to give up in practice, let alone a real game.

I obviously love Hayes, though. Rangers came into the season with one of the lowest ranked prospect pools in the league, but we've always been pretty good with UFAs. We needed size, we needed a center and there he was.

He's astonishingly bad on faceoffs but I'd rather have that than bad defense, I've noticed very few brainfarts for such a young center.

We refer to Guenin as 'The General' often, because it's his job to point out (visibly pointing) what other player's defensive assignments are on the ice each game. But then when a situation actually calls for him to do something he is either out of position or busy defending the empty space around him to do anything.

Patrick Roy told him last year that he had finally made it to the NHL and to get a home. Now the fans are numb to his indiscretions at this point.

Not to take anything away from the goal (which is beautiful) but that's some pretty bad defense right there. It's not like Hayes is even that fast.
