Value of: Kerins the next RFA Broberg?

I believe he's an RFA this summer, flames need young centres, (so does everyone else) so not sure why they're messing around.

Guy needs to be in a lineup. PPG player for the last while in both AHL/NHL. Has grown/had success.

Great hands, nice shot, good iq, kinda not prototypical centre body type, but I think that plays to his favour on 3/4th lines/banging lines.

Could easily see 5-7 teams putting offers. There's basically 0 risk, and 100% reward here, and it's probably costing you less than 2 mil/yr.

Seems like a no brainer, no idea why Calgary hasn't signed him yet to a small one way for that 4th line C/13th man spot.

I think you are overrating him, or, at least, the interest he would generate as an offer sheet guy. He's a great AHL scorer but it's way too early to extrapolate that he's some sort of NHL find because he has 0 goals and 4 assists in 5 career games in the NHL.

He's skilled and hard-working but he's 5-11 and not some elite skater. He's good prospect with easy bottom six projections, as you allude to, but he's not a player a team is going to give a $2 million AAV one-way offer sheet to.

He will sign a minimum RFA extension with the Flames, maybe he gets multiple years with some one-way clauses and he will compete for a spot in the Flames line-up in the fall.

I definitely understand that line of thought, because it's true... but what else has he got to do/prove at that level?

In the next couple years, he will drift into the hall of very good ahl players... of which there are thousands, once he hit's 25/26, there's younger/more interesting prospects getting looks and he's a perpetual PPG AHL player like many very very good players before.

He needs to use this RFA time right now while he's still seen as "young" to get a solid NHL season under his belt.

His stock won't be higher, maybe next summer if he does the same thing in the AHL, but that's basically the window he's got.

Feels like he is a candidate for one of those 2x$850K extensions with the 2nd year a one-way contract.

Flames have some sneaky good depth coming up the pipeline with more interesting physical skills than Rory, but Kerins has certainly worked hard to improve his game, I do think he's earned an extended look.

100%

the issue is that too many teams are looking for young centres. Someone's going to give him a very good deal if he makes it to the RFA date.

Someone will give him 1-1.5X2yr one way. Almost forsure. There's basically no danger here, all upside.

Will Calgary match if teams send him an offersheet of 1.5M?

Presumably since cap space isn't an issue and they'd lose him for nothing.

Above that though? They almost assuredly let him go for a 3rd as compensation. The problem here is that Huska doesn't believe Kerins offers attributes that can make him an effective fourth liner and he's not going to play him above Kadri, Backlund, or Frost.

I didn't want to start an entire new thread on this but do you think there is a chance that Calgary doesn't tender/qualify Morgan Frost?

12 pts in 32GP with the Flames.

Little to no chance of that happening. He played much better than the counting stats suggest. He had a terrible on ice shooting % after the acquisition. He really helped our PP with faceoff wins and zone entries too.

100%, he actually looked really good, if you weren't paying attention to his stats, you'd have assumed they were much better.

No, they probably try and lock him up to a ~5 year deal. his production did not match his play well. He looked quite solid, great hands, good speed, and good in the dot. His shooting percentage with the flames was less than half of what it was with the Flyers over the last few years. I would be shocked if that doesn't normalize back to at least 10%. Also worth noting we so desperately need centers under 30 on this roster, so 100% he stays IMO
