Thoughts? He has developed into a scoring winger with a wicked shot, a physical edge and may be the team's best penalty killer. Do the Kings buy out some UFA years now or do they risk losing him after next season? He is only 26 at the beginning of next season so we have a chance to lock him up for his prime years. I think 6 years at $5.75 mm would work for both sides.

That has happened just once in his career and would be a sensational decline.

For $4.5 or less, Kempe will not sign.

I would start to become nervous.
Even though he's mostly played in shortened seasons his career high is only 37 points.

I'm just saying to be cautious throwing 4.5 million + at someone especially with term.

For example I think 6x6 would be a huge gamble.

Thats why we should focus on PPG and his latest years to discuss his new contract.

Yeah no, he likely tops out at $5 mill per..
he’ll probably be offered slightly more than Iafallo and settle on that $5mil figure. The guy is definitely having a breakout and is scoring though his assists are surprisingly low for all he’s created this season.. but I don’t see how he’ll get almost $6mil per without the proven scorer track record

His shooting percentage is 16.5%. Which is relatively high, but not so high that it's worrisome. His career average is 11.4%.

So his scoring rate should come down a little, but not too much.

I see him as a 25+ goal scorer for the next 5 years or so. He also PKs and makes some nice backchecking plays from time to time. That's good value at say 5.5M per season.

This year's numbers have definitely driven up the price, no question. But I'd also be nervous paying with the expectation that it's his new normal - his goals per game this season is nearly double his best with any club at any time going back to his age 16 season. He may well turn into a consistent 30 goal scorer but the track record isn't there yet. I think the number they arrive at would have to reflect that. Could performance bonuses be negotiated?

He'll be an arbitration-eligible RFA at the end of this contract so that may come into play too.

54 point pace this season. Breakout year, most consistent season he has had by far. Need to keep things in perspective though, you could easily overpay if he hits 30 goals+ one time, but he might still end up being a 45-55 point player per year, not $6 million plus per in my books, but $4.5 to $5.5 with some term is fair. Question really is, what does Kempe want? He could gamble and sign a short term deal and go for the big money after next season as a UFA.

William Karlsson is an interesting comp.

He hadn't done anything in the NHL, then at 24 years old suddenly scored 43 goals. Vegas gave him 5.9M for 8 years.

and then comes back down to earth (or the steroid doc gets relieved of duty because of schmidt ) and ouch. would be a gamble to use that as a comp in a contract negotiation

i wouldn't be too hurt if we end up giving kempe a $5Mx5, i reckon we could wrangle up someone else if he ends up scoring a ton this season and commands $6M+

Whatever Kempe wants I would give! Not Kopi money but something that befits a team leading goal scorer
