Drafting 9th = Getting a prospect and waiting 2-3 years and he may not materialize into much.

Trading 9th for a cost controlled RFA/Player under 25 = Years of control and getting a player needed that fits the roster now.

Pros and cons but this will be year 15 of the drought.

I already know what I would do.

Trashing the 9th pick as a wait and see for 3 years (totally true), but then the next line we are able to trade that risky unmaterialized asset for a cost controlled RFA player under 25? I mean, who is doing that?

"I mean who is doing that"

Every single team that makes the playoffs looking for a rental for starters

Perhaps look at the history of trades over the last 10 years and it will help you with your questions. Now that we have AI maybe AI can help you too?

Generally speaking thats why rebuilding teams value the 1sts while playoffs teams dont.

I can give you some links to trades if you like where 1st round picks are moved for players. Its not hard to find, TSN? NHL.COM?

Im talking about the opposite. And what you are referring to happens at the deadline and it's for rentals that are on expring contracts, not cost controlled RFA's. Who is giving up the cost controlled player for the 9th OA pick that's highly uncertain to make the show? Most GM's would get fired..

This is a very poor draft. The 9oa pick would be like a late first or even a second rounder in next year's draft that's projected to be very deep. You aren't getting anything of real value for it, it really is the absolute shittiest position: Won't get a good prospect and minimal value as a trade chip.
i would love for the pen's to move up. what would be the cost?

What about a bigger trade with Colorado for Colton+Lehkonen. Colton has a no trade clause this year, but he’s from NJ so it moves him much closer to home. Lehkonen has a 12 team no trade, so difficult to say if Buffalo would certainly be on the list. In a world they’re both willing to go, what’s the best offer Sabres could do for them? Happy to trade separately and throw Wood in too

I would think Wood would have a negative value to any deal, Colton+Lehkonen or otherwise, even if he's the spawn of an alumni and born in Buffalo. Wouldn't Colorado be looking to keep their window open more than looking for a pick at 9OA? I mean, if the Avs want draft capital, I would be happy to see Buffalo give up 9OA and some other picks to make this happen. The downside is some sort of dollar value has to move too and that's probably Samuelsson or Quinn who could be very good elsewhere instead of wallowing where they are now.

What does Colorado need?

It would mostly be pieces to move in other deals or young roster players. For example if Colorado could use the draft ammo to start the NYI rebuild and land Horvat (a player the Isles likely would prefer out of conference) I think it would make a lot of sense. I just don’t know how Buffalo values different pieces. For example, would Rosen+2nd be too pricey for Colton alone?

For a guy that we really don't need and is coming off a 25 point year?

Like why?

29 points in 61 games (essentially how 0.5ppg pace). He’s a versatile middle 6 forward with grit, can play center and has good playoff experience.

We have a lot players "who can play center" .. we already have a 4 million dollar player "with grit" ... he isn't particularly good defensively.

He may have made sense before McLeod .. we just don't need him and those assets could be used for something we do need.

fair enough, that still leaves Lehkonen as a potential trade candidate for Buffalo. Legit two-way top 6 forward who PKs, scores clutch goals and goes to the dirty areas.

Only forwards i am looking at are legit top 6 Centers..otherwise I would rather concentrate on defense.

Would all depend on what we do on defense and if another winger is needed

I wouldn’t mind Lekhonen at all - guy is the sort who wins his line’s nightly five-on-five matchup and can contribute on the 2nd PP as a low or netfront type. That’s not to say Buffalo’s management would, but I would.
