I don't really think it's really either Laviolette's or Drury's fault, though I think Lavi is probably more to blame than Drury. But really, it's on the players for not showing up.

Drury also does himself no favors by refusing to speak to the media ever. Then when he does, it’s just the usual platitudes.

Honestly I think the blame for this season lies first and foremost at the feet of the vets. There were long stretches of the season where Panarin was the only veteran skater who gave any sort of a shit (with allowances to Trocheck being hurt). Guys like Kreider, Zibanejad, Trouba? They were the ones who chose to torpedo this season because they were unhappy with the front office holding them accountable.
In a vacuum, the Laviolette choice made some sense at the time. Take a Gallant, who got the team into a decent spot but really was poor tactically. And upgrade on what was Gallant's biggest weakness, see if that puts them over the top. As it turns out, it didn't, but I think it was a worthwhile gamble to make on a team that looked like a few lucky breaks from making the Finals.
I don't have a ton of confidence in Drury, but I have less in both the veteran core and Laviolette, and if 2 of the 3 need to go, it's those 2 and not him.

Fire both but the problem is they need someone who will commit to development and a long term build.

The team isn’t good enough and has never been good enough. The primary culprit is the lack of development of Lafreniere and Kakko, and, to a lesser extent, the fact that Andersson, Chytil and Kravtsov never turned into even middle six pieces.
You can’t swing and miss on five, six high first round picks. The Rangers failed as an organization on this rebuild and there’s no other way to put it.
They need a GM who can build from scratch and then he needs to come here with a directive to do that.

Keep Drury.
He wants to clean out the country club losers.
Let him trade away kreider mika and maybe bread.
A new GM may want to be loyal to those losers.
Once he gets rid of the losers he can leave too.

He was one of the only guys in hockey, maybe the only guy in hockey, that had both the respect and balls to tell Dolan to f*** off. And he did. Slats had his faults, as all GMs do, but he pulled the trigger when it was the right time, and that's maybe the best quality a GM can have.Lavi is almost 100% gone. Maybe 99.87% gone.
Not sure about Drury. I think he tried to change this going back to last summer. My concern with Drury isn't his past moves. My concern would be is he the guy to rebuild the team for the future.

I still think it's a case of the team not being as good many people believed. Many of the players were over achievers or had career years. How many times over the last 4-5 seasons have we commented on the fact that (a) they were bad at fundamentals, (b) were bad playing 5-on-5, (c) were softer than melted butter making them easy to play against and (d) were too dependent on the PP and goaltending.

Thats it exactly it. I predicted we would fall back to earth last summer. I didn't know it would be so hard a drop but when your top 6 are over 30 its unlikely they would match their career years. We gave it everything we had last season like a boxer punching himself out by round 6, then crashing afterwards.
Agreed......for me, the biggest red flag were all those comeback wins.....that is not the sign of a good team.

I guess I see Drury at least attempting to turn over this veteran group by all of the rumors and moves he's made. He hasn't been perfect but Trouba, Goodrow, the desire to trade Kreider. Playing Othmann, Berard, Rempe, Edstrom, Perrault.
The only serious question here is whether to fire Drury or not.
On the one hand, he basically inherited this crew. The consistent difference makers on this team have been: Panarin, Shesty, Kreider, Fox, and Zib. Despite large salaries to Trouba, Trocheck, or whoever...those 5 guys were the primary players they counted on to produce and they were clearly talented. So I don't blame him for giving them an honest chance to win as a team, and sticking with them after they were outplayed by Tampa in 21-22.
That commitment should have been questioned after the Devils embarrassed us in 22-23. The fact that Drury didn't change up that core was definitely questionable. Then getting outplayed again in 23-24, this time by Florida, and once again not changing that core 5 guys in the offseason, is simply inexcusable. I don't care what the cap implications are, you can not run it back. They needed a major shake-up....and Drury didn't get it done.
You can obviously question plenty of other things about his reign, but to me...not making some kind of change to Panarin, Shesty, Fox, Kreider and Zib over these past couple years is my biggest critique. In my opinion, this year is in part the culmination of players no longer believing in each other after losing too many times together. And I put that on Drury's shoulders for not finding a way to change things up. It's unacceptable.
And regarding Lav....firing him is absolutely a given. He completely lost the room months ago. How he survived through Xmas is an indictment of Drury on its own.
