He'll be used as trade bait to move up atbthe draft. He has enough trade value for that to happen and move if 30th overall is included
Once more, why the f*** would the Rangers think about futures now when they are basically in their last year of their proper window with this core?

Unless you are talking about using Kakko to move up, and then flip that 1st to someone for a proper player. Which would be a strange turn of events.

I don't see the Rangers signing a guy and then trading him. If the Rangers were going to trade him, they would have traded his rights before the QO deadline. It doesn't matter that they could move up on draft night. The Rangers have always done business by the unwritten rules.

They were absolutely in the right to LTIR Trouba and bank the cap for the deadline because he was legit hurt, and still wouldn't do it.

Well, Drury did it with Howden. And it does make it easier to sell to teams I think.

They never actually announced signing Howden. It was "according to a source" and there was likely an understanding that he was being shopped.

The Rangers announced on social media that Kakko is "re-signed." It's a huge distinction.

They didn't? I thought they did, but that is an important point.

I don't even know how this makes sense, but I think a trade is both more likely and less likely now lol. Like I said, this deal should make more teams interested. Also, shows that the Rangers are fine with keeping him and both the club and the player are on the same page. Good job all around.

There's a chance they did and I blocked it out because I want to pretend Howden doesn't exist but I also hate Kakko and I noticed it yesterday.

Rangers wouldn’t say no to a chance of getting more help with draft picks but their priority is immediate buildup of a lineup. The type of a roster player is unknown but it is likely another youngster needing a chance of scenery.

I think they would say no to straight picks or just another prospect with upside. I'm sure they rather bet that Kakko does what he did in the 2022-2023 season, than trading him for futures with this cap hit.

The fact that both the club and the player have agreed upon this deal well before the free agency, kinda tells you they were both on the same page.
You're likely right. I hope both think he's a more capable player.

I do think that if anyone other than Buchnevich is on that line we aren't winning a thing. Because he was the last player to make that duo really click.

I sincerely hope that Laviolette has something up his sleeve to help Kakko break out, and bounce back Zibanejad.
Id personally throw laff with mika and kreider and if mika and kreider still cant do a thing 5v5 then its time to talk to mika and ask him to politely retire haha

Wasnt he traded so they could protect another player in the expansion draft? Or sign someone? I forgot the circumstances

Yes, the trade was made with the expansion draft in mind. Getting an asset for Howden rather than losing him for nothing. He was an RFA player with control unlike Blackwell who they ended up losing instead.

And what’s funny is they then turned around and traded for Reaves right after that draft as Vegas had the capability of protecting both Howden and Reaves

how do you bank cap with someone going on LTIR?

Sign and trade.
Drury will try to include him in a bigger deal.
Considering how quick he signed, and his comments at breakup day, I really dont see that.
I think both drury and Kakko know theres more he can do, and this is his real last opportunity,
I think Kakko took this deal knowing he has a coach who wants to see him exceed as opposed to Gallant.
I think if he works on his skating and his shot, both things that are improvable, he can absolutely be a key player for us. and he's absolutely not a finished product.

Keep Kakko this summer. Have him work on his skating. Hope for a Laf-like breakout next season. Trade him for Tkachuk next summer after he regains trade value and Brady’s NMC kicks in.

Keep Kakko.

His floor is excellent defensive 3rd-liner. At his contract he's an absolute bargain.

Of course I hope there's an unreached ceiling still out there.

That said, I would trade ANY player if I thought it was helping the team longterm.
Thats mostly a reasonable take. I might be willing to risk the long term benefit, for a fantastic short term benefit.
But there are two players who the offer would have to be insane for me to consider moving.
Laf and Fox.

Waste of cap space, waste of a roster spot. I don’t wanna hear about next steps and give him more time. I hear McIlrath is gonna break out any year now too.
I remember hearing “elite edgework.” Hes a bottom 6 guy who doesn’t play special teams or bring any physical play. Time to move on.

A bargain? Laf is a bargain. Still paying for potential.

Goodrow brings more than Kakko.
