Kakko has improved, obviously, but also he's finally getting linemates that want to play the same way as he does; as he's built for.

He's been a possession beast since his second season, but nobody else on the team with a modicum of skill wanted to play that way. Now he has some guys to play with, and what do you know, they're probably the best 5v5 line on the team AND they're playing a playoff style of game.

You still see some lowkey shade thrown at him, that he's the benefactor of his linemates play, but he's driving that line as much as anybody. Not everyone is ready to admit it yet is all.

He's playing with Brodz and had a 2 point game. The fact that he hasn't fallen off a cliff without Chytil (they STILL don't give up goals while possessing and scoring) makes this start to the season seem very real. Let the people be wrong. We've gotta sign him while we can afford it.

Yup, it really seems like the bulk of the chemistry is between Cuylle and Kakko. Having Chytil to help with zone entries and creating offense is perfect, but I bet they could take on any competent centre and still be an effective line.

I can see that point of view. Both are work the walls type of guys.

I feel like Kakko is the type of guy to be amenable to a 6 year 4.5 mil contract. For all the ink spilled talking about him being a trade candidate all these years, and the fans (myself included) at times being ready to give up on him, I actually think he likes it here.

Im excited for the future of our top 6 with Lafreniere, Chytil, Cuylle and Kakko. They are all really on the upswing.

Yup, and the routes they take when they're cycling and trying to deny zone exits are nearly identical. It's pretty rare for them to cycle the puck to nobody; they're on the same page about when it's time to get the puck to the point and go hard to the net.

Agreed about Kakko's intentions. I don't think we'll get him that cheap though, especially at his current level of play. Will likely be pushing 6x6.

Honestly I'm fine with what. The rangers need to prioritize the younger core this summer. Kakko, Cuylle, Miller need new contracts (obviously Igor too but thats its own thing). If they have to overpay slightly right now, do it. If you have to trade Trouba and Kreider this summer to make the cap work? You do it. It's how they can tightrope the prophesized "2 Windows".

If the cap indeed increases to 95M+ it makes it much easier to allot 4.5M or whatever to Kakko if he continues to play as he has. I’m still skeptical he will be a long-term piece just because of the Rangers strength on the wings but I would like to keep that line together, I think they all mesh really well and they play the type of heavy cycle game with skill that cup winners play.

I'm very happy with the way he is playing, and I'm glad he's having success, but there's no way he gets that much.

I could see $4.5-$4.75m on a long term deal, assuming he would take it. He'll be 24 this year so we are talking about a contract that takes him to 31-32 if he takes an 8 year deal. I could see him requesting 6 years though to be a UFA at 30

If he puts up ~50 even strength points and finishes the season at like +50, it will hard to talk his agent down much below 6.

Only 41 guys in the league had 50+ ESP last year, and Kakko would be doing it with elite defensive numbers.

I think Drury will either do 6 or 8, to keep him from hitting ufa at the same time as Laf.

Laf got $7+ after a season in which he played higher in the lineup, with a star player, and recorded 0.695 ppg (though he also had a very good playoffs).

Kakko is playing less but recording 0.647 ppg right now. He has more assists less goals projected than Laf did, but.... he could get more than you'd expect.
