I'd hold my horses. He's looking good right now but sometimes there's a honeymoon phase with the new team. However, he does have the talent and he himself said that it's all about confidence for him. He felt like the Rangers didn't trust him and he needed to play mistake free hockey. In Kraken, they're telling him he's good and they're willing to give him the minutes even if he makes a mistake here and there. He's feeling it and performing. Let's see if it can last.
It was robbery even if kakko wasn’t a ppg. Kakko is a good defence forward. He was also too young to give up on so easily. The gm I’m New York should be fired. The Trouba trade was horrible. This trade is even worse.

Im a Winnipeg fan and he looked really good when the Kraken played the Jets. I think its always been there for him but he has been immersed in a problematic hockey culture in NYR that is boiling over. I think the Kraken got a very good young player to build with.

I expect the cooking to continue for Kakko. They play Buffalo today so that should keep some ice open for opportunities... Notice for all of you fantasy managers...

The Kakko trade was terrible, but what do you mean the Trouba trade was horrible? The Rangers got a (better, cheaper) 6 D and a pick for Trouba without retaining a dime. That's phenomenal value

Rangers looked pretty damn good to me before the Trouba trade and the 92/8 contract.
I wouldn't call it ood value going from a contender to a borderline playoff team. Maybe Trouba was respected in the locker room, even he had his flaws on the ice.

It felt to me like Trouba was playing borderline recklessly because he was carrying the whole reputation of New York's "toughness" on his back. Without him they feel like a pretty soft team, apart from the occasional Rempe hit or fight.

Trouba is far from perfect as a hockey player but he just seems like one of those guys that's hell to play against because he finishes every hit and is just a mean S.O.B in general.

It would be a pretty funny outcome if Kakko became a perpetual Selke finalist. And that is at least plausible.

Almost a point per game playing on a new team, on their first line. During the year 2025 thus far, he also leads the team in scoring with 10 points in 9 games. Also, for the record, his xGF% is 53.53% when #2 on Kraken is at 50.46% and his 5on5 PDO is only 1.012 and his offensive zone start % is only 41.38% meaning he's mainly been receiving defensive assignments.

Isn't it interesting how on Rangers he was kept on the 3rd line and lamented for his lack of production, but now that he plays on the first line for Seattle Kraken, he has first line production? And let's recall Rangers treated him as a cap dump for the trade, receiving negative value, and he's a 23yo RFA.

That will do it.

He never got a decent shot above 3rd line minutes here.

NYR does not know how to develop scoring forwards.

Combination of things. Like many have noted, he did have good advanced stats even in the Rangers, and he was likely more a fan favorite than the villain as well.

The truth comes out much later, like it often comes in hockey. I have my money on the Rangers ANCIENT management and leadership culture having something to do with this.

100% this. There is rot from ownership on down.

Now imagine what Laffy could do with a change of scenery!

He's already gotten plenty of top unit and top line time with Panarin. And is still a very underwhelming player. Maybe a change of scenery would help him but he might also just lack the passion to be a star player.

Can't see how it wouldn't help him. Rangers top players are lazy af, and Lafreniere has fallen into that trap. He's also learned to defer to the top talent on the team. If he went somewhere where he was the top talent I can't see how he wouldn't make at least some positive strides.

Lee Stempniak.

Plenty of players can have a hot 15 games.
Yes but those guys weren’t a 2nd overall pick. The problem with Kakko and even Lafreniere is that they were high picks that went to teams with star players in front of them. How many 1st overall picks went to teams with guys like Panarin in front of them on the depth chart?
