Contract talks between LA Kings and Justin Williams (UFA July 1) began last week..Kings really want to bring him back and Williams loves LA

However Williams agent Thane Campbell has told Kings that deal needs to be done in near future or talks will be shelved until after year...

Williams doesn't want contract talks to be a distraction, wants to focus on winning games. So deal has to get done within a few weeks..

On the one hand, Williams has never been UFA... but then again he loves LA. will be interesting. Kings want to bring him back...

I bet he gets a deal similar to that of Gaborik to keep the cap hit low on a long-term extension.

I hope they can work it out. Sucks about the imposed time frame though, probably not making things any easier. If Williams wants a BIG payday he can get it, teams would be lining up for his services. I certainly wouldn't hold it against him. Would suck to lose him since he can be such a difference-maker when he's "on" but there will be some cap casualties at some point.

Yeah I wouldn't hold it against him at all if he goes chasing the money. Though it would really suck to see him in another jersey.

Also reassuring to see him picking up the scoring of late.

I can see the agent's angle on trying to pressure DL into doing a contract 'quickly' but I don't see DL biting or being rushed
Also, as much as I love JW, I think he'll want more of a term than DL will want to offer. I think DL would want something akin to 2 yrs. and JW will want the 5 year and you can't blame him, he'll be turning 34 next year and it's likely to be his last contract..
I think the reason the agent said if it doesn't get done 'now' that it won't get done until summer is to try to force DL's hand.
I think DL will wait him out.
And they already have MG, DB on LTC, with TT and TP about to get bridge deals, if the give JW a LTC, that leaves no room for the prospects to move up from the AHL and OHL.
Hopefully they can come to an agreement, but I wouldn't be surprised if JW gets a 5 year deal with another team.

Considering how quickly they took care of Martinez's extension, I don't anticipate Lombardi dragging his feet in locking up one of his locker room leaders and culture changers who brought a winning attitude to the team.

Exactly.

DL is a huge JW guy. Expect STGD ASAP

Williams has been a patient soldier for the team and been reward with 2 cups and a Conn Smythe. I don't see him going anywhere unless he's really asking for the impossible from DL.

They could move Dustin Brown, Matt Greene, Nolan and Clifford also. Just keep the core together, and bring in some younger energy players with something to prove.

Losing Williams would be like losing Mitchell. Of all the guys that have left since the Cups for one reason or another, Mitchell was the toughest to see go. So no complaints from me if they get Williams signed.

Yea I'd hate to see Williams go. We're really missing Mitchell right now too.

In the likelihood that Voynov does not return, which at this point we should prepare for both scenarios, his cap will cover Kopitar's increase and part of Williams. I don't see Williams leaving.

I know all the guys on this team care. no one is mailing it in or slacking off cause it's "just the regular season". I don't buy that argument. But Williams, along with Quick, are the two guys who SHOW it, night in, night out. You can see it in this guys face when they zoom into him on the bench, and you can see it at the faceoff circle when he's battling for position.

We know how good he is in the playoffs, and he knows he's esteemed league wide there (even before the Smythe), but he still battles harder in the RS than just about anybody on this team, a lot of whom have A LOT more to prove than JW at this point in his career.

I want to see him finish his career in Kings sweater more than any other player on this team besides Quick. I would be bummed to see any of the core leave, but I know if they left we'd be getting a large fortune in return. No one has bled Kings colours more than JW since Deadmarsh. Get a deal done DL.

I think Dean believes that Williams is one of his "glue guys" on this team. I'm not surprised that he is next on Dean's list of contract negotiations.

Hate to rain on your parade but Brown and Greene are parts of the core.

If their recent deals don't tell folks this, they need to pay closer attention.

The stuff that comes up from time to time among fans regarding taking the "C" away from Brown is never going to happen.

Seriously dude, go back to playing in your fantasy league. They just signed greene to a four year deal and brown isn't going anywhere.

Your funny. Brown is the Capt and Greene just was locked up for four years cause he is a big Dean guy. Both are part of the Kings core, even if they are not part of yours.

Part of me can't imagine the Kings without Williams. The guy is massive clutch. The more sinister part almost wishes he would price himself out of a contract -- perhaps he's nursing an injury(?) because it's painful to watch how slow he's getting.
