Speculation: Jussi Jokinen On Waivers

Carolina has placed Jussi Jokinen on waivers.
I know how much people here want a speedy top 9 winger, and I think we could use him.
I have always liked this guy and picked him very high in my fantasy pool.
Unfortunately I got burned and outside of a good 5 game streak, he has had a terrible year (4 points in first 19 games, 0 in last 6).
He's only 29 and I think still has the skill to turn it around.
He is signed to $3 million this year and next year.
I think we have cap space to burn right now especially with Murray gone.

Thoughts on putting in a claim for this guy?

Havlat - Thornton - Burns
Marleau - Couture - Jokinen
Sheppard - Pavelski - Galiardi
Clowe - Gomez - Wingels
Desjardins - Handzus - Burish

Absolutely do it! I have a soft sport for the juicer for some reason.

Copied this from the NHL news/notes thread

To get a top 6 forward for free and only pay him 3mil is a good deal IMO. He is also the type of forward we could use. If he doesn't work out, trade him for a pick or waive him. Low risk medium reward deal.

345pts in 566 in games is top 6 numbers IMO. He averages .61ppg which would be 50pts in a 82 game season which is pretty good for a 2nd line forward. Also, you have to consider that he wasn't playing on very good teams so his linemates haven't been the best.

You could play him with Couture and Patty instead of Wingels or you could put with Pavs on the 3rd line with Shep. Good Tweener.

Just checked his stats again and he is 54% on faceoffs in his career. Pretty good for a winger. 1608 wins 1388 losses

Havlat Jumbo Burns
Marleau Couture Clowe
Sheppard Pavs Jokinen
Galiardi Desi Wingels

That would be the lineup I would go with.

I would still trade Clowe asap, and Burns can't stay at forward forever.

Havlat - Jumbo - Burns
Marleau - Couture - Jokinen
Sheppard - Pavs - Wingels
Galiardi - Gomez - Burish/Desi

Something like that. This is another reason we should claim him, when we move Burns back to defense we are going to need to adjust. Pav's looked a LOT better back at center so now we have even LESS wingers.

Havlat - Jumbo - Wingels
Marleau - Couture - Jokinen
Galiardi - Pavs - Sheppard
Desi - Gomez - Burish

Bleh, we really need a couple of good wingers heh.

I can already see the epic waffle GDT. :laugh: I wouldn't be against picking him up, but it is a bit of a red flag that he was waived and not traded. Did he have a NTC?

Either way, I doubt he'll reach us. Some east coast team will probably claim him first.

10 points in 30 games, -7 (worst on the team)

True, but in comparison to some of our other top 9 forwards:

Gomez --> 10 points in 25 games, -9
Havlat --> 10 points in 24 games, +3
Clowe --> 9 points in 25 games, -7
Wingels --> 7 points in 25 games, -7
Galiardi --> 5 points in 19 games, -1
Sheppard --> 4 points in 23 games, -7

There has to be some sort of non-hockey related issue here... GMs don't just waive perfectly good top-9 players. As long as DW does his research (like he failed to do with C. White) and Jussi checks out, then I think putting in a claim would be worth-while.

With horrid shooting percentages and PDO.

Come on, man, what's your problem with Jussi. You have extremely high standards. He's playing with Drayson Bowman and Chad Larose, for god's sake, and he'd be like 5th on our team in points.

I'll be shocked if he gets passed the Islanders. I would take him though, especially since it costs nothing.

Heres the real point. Whats the harm? We can't win a cup likely anyway, we are likely trading Clowe anyway. He certainly isn't going to make us any worse lol.

Or they are clearing cap space for something. Maybe they want Boyle or Clowe :P
