Player Discussion Juraj Slafkovsky Discussion

Therefore they are different players and have different skillsets.

The Leafs for example had the same kind of forward throughout the lineup and failed to get out of the first round every year. That's probalby what would've happened to us if we drafted Cooley.
Yes they are different, nobody should try to lie about a players skillset though, thats just asinine.

I'll start lying about Hutson being 6'3 and people just not being able to read a tape measure, it makes as much sense as saying Slaf has the same IQ as Suzuki and Hutson.

Cooley is a top 6 C, a first line C, I suspect, so no not really. He goes to the right areas and plays a great defensive game.

The Leafs problem is that theyre paying a loser 14 millions a year.

lol modern logic goes something like “the world can’t even agree on metric vs imperial, and online published metrics are fake news (proof: nhl, team, and hockey db discrepancies) therefore Hutson has as much of a chance to be 6’3 as anything, I’ll make my own call there”.

They really need to start teaching logic/philosophy in high school now, the moment kids get their hands on a smart phone. I suspect it’ll get worse with everyone becoming empty vessels through which chat gpt and twitter mobs talk.

Logic to be taught by who? Teachers that themselves most of the time lack any?

Lol... does Hutson identify as 6'3"? :D

If Xhekaj has a legion of fans who identify him as an NHL player, I think Hutson is entitled to identify as 6’3”!

his superman chin must remain clean shaven
… Clark Kent chin, more than 50% of the time…

Agreed teachers could all use the same classes lol. Although if you’ve been to uni you have to have taken philo..

It would hopefully kill this messed up contemporary idea that logic is now about “my common sense vs your common sense” (and not scientific method). I grew up before I could conveniently find people to validate my conclusions online however weird..

I waaaaay prefer when you guys show me wrong with stats, vids, comparables, those weirdly acronym’d charts vs me asking Reddit if I am right about a thing (which apparently I am 100% of the time when I do).

Slaf was pretty good in the playoffs honestly. Everyone played well except Laine pretty much.
Indeed, the players did what could be expected of them. The problems were:
-Young D lacking a bit of physicality and experience.
-Lack of a good second line center.
-Lack of depth. The team could not rest anyone down the stretch, like, say, Suzuki, and they couldn't sit guys even when they were injured enough to be ineffective, like Armia and Laine at times, Heineman after his accident.
-Lack of playoff experience. They have to learn to turn up the intensity when an opposing player takes liberties and the refs show they will only call one team for being too physical. Winning teams get fierce when they get jobbed, losing teams expect rational calls.

Overall they need one C, and one or two D who can play top 4 and move everyone else down, plus some grinders. Laval has some guys who should be able to fill bottom 6 physical roles, Tuch and Xhekaj, at least. If Reinbacher really steps up and one of the other guys makes more progress than I would expect that would leave only the 2C.

I doubt they are aiming for a cup next year, more for an interim step. A solid entry into the playoffs and a series win or two. They don't need to completely fix everything immediately, and they don't need to trade prospects or picks unless the deal is really good. I expect them to look hard at FA Cs, and to jump if a top C or top D becomes available, they don't have to make meh deals but if there is an option to get a top guy they have to go for it. I'm pretty sure Hughes is not going to do the MB thing and leave gaping holes in the lineup while acquiring a series of guys who clearly don't make the cut with the expectation one of them will suddenly play better than he ever has at any level.

I hope he gets more explosive possibly more than anything.

Refining his skills. Like someone mentioned; a quicker release would be huge. I’m hoping he handles the puck more and starts flashing those mitts.

Just being more aggressive with the puck on his stick. He doesn’t have to run around and hit everything I just want to see him using his body to protect the puck, win board battles and taking up space in front of the net. Lay out the hits when they come to you. No need to run around like an idiot

Everyone talk about Demidov and Hutson who have superstar talent, but if Slafkovsky put all his unique package together, this guy can be the most dominant player in this team.

I'm 100% confident with him to reach his full potential, he have unique personnality, he speak like a 30 years old, he is already a good leader in this team and know how to handle journalist.

He want to make a difference, like Demidov and Hutson, he is a huge hard worker with his great talent aswell. That's a perfect combinaison to become a special player in this league.

I don't see superstar in him. I do agree though that he can be a special player if things go right.

I'm expecting him to be able to play on the first line. I'm not expecting superstar, franchise talent, power forward... I just see a big skilled player who will have a physical aspect to his game. Good at puck battles and can step in for the occasional skirmish.

He was not-so-subtly called out by Hughes and Gorton, particularly Hughes, for allegedly letting the contract get to his head and coming to the season less-than-optimally prepared. It's good that Slaf has already announced he will stay in Montreal to train in town over summer. I think with all his recent public statements, Slafkovsky knows there's more to come from him and more expected.

I predicted a big playoffs from him and he only partially delivered. For next season, he'll finally start to consistently impress. Just playing with jump every game is enough to impress, he's got the physical tools. He can really do some damage on the ice with every shift if he just gets to the boards and into the slot/paint consistently.

Man...Slaf is 21. So many guys are just breaking into the league at this age. We are discussing Mavrik Bourque and Will Cuylle in the trade forum forgetting that they are 2 years older than Slaf.

As Rehab said above. Slaf will start to consistently impress the entire fanbase next year. I expect huge things from him. His "next level" could be one of the most dominant power forwards in the NHL. At 21/22 years old.

what did they say, i mussed have missed that comment on slaf.

I don't like the " big guys take longer" excuse, some do, some don't, same as any other players. And McKinnon ain't that big, 6' 200lbs.
You don't need this as an excuse. He was 20 for 90% of the seasopn. It's absolutely not rare at all to see players develop anywhere between 21 and 23. He was never considered a generational player. People get too stuck on the 1st overall status. There was no guarantee generational players that year. People are like Cooley bla bla he was drafted 3rd which means he was not seen as a surefire generational player either.

He is?!!!
Good, very good.

His training last off-season was clearly off-mark to what was needed.
Not sure it was off mark. He had some injury near the start of the season from what we understood, I think his back, maybe he didn’t get enough training because of it closer to the season.

He mentioned something last year about being fed up with being a celebrity in Slovakia

It SEEMS, amazingly enough, he is even more annoyingly popular over there than even the amount of celebrity we give to Habs players over here

So while some Hab players might dislike the 'super' attention, Slaf actually prefers it here to get away from national attention over there apparently lol
