Player Discussion Juraj Slafkovsky Discussion

That’s just not his game. Rantanen doesn’t need to lay big hits every game to be relevant.

body on body puck battles and relentless forecheck should be his primary assets when fully mature. Think of a bigger & more talented version of Lehkonen

if they promote Demidov to PP1 during the playoffs, i think it would benefit Slaf to be The Guy on PP2.

put him on the half-wall - let the powerplay run through him. no Suzuki or Caufield or Hutson to defer to.

Too important to have someone in front of the goalie in the playoffs. PP1 needs Slaf.. it doesn't need both Laine and Caufield.

this would be under the assumption that the current PP strategy isn't effective. i don't think they would be moving Demidov up to PP1 if things are working well.

Slaf's role right now as bumper is to be low in the slot at the crease and at the goal mouth, depending on puck movement. but you can spread that role to two players and have one guy play high slot and one guy at the goal mouth.

Demidov can play half-wall with Suzuki in the high slot, Caufield at the goal mouth on the opposite side of Laine who would be in his usual spot - who can be fed by any of the other three Fs + Hutson

Things haven't been working well, so they are gonna have to make a move on the PP sooner rather than later. They've got two games in Washington to get it going, if not, then at home in Montreal, they need to make the move.

You shouldn't be putting Caufield, Laine or Suzuki or even Demidov net front. That pretty much limits their skills and they wouldn't be very effective in doing so.

One of Laine or Caufield would obviously shift down for Demidov. They are both most effective in the same spot. No amount of moving Caufield around with Laine in the one-timer spot, has produced anything productive for Caufield.

Caufield had 7 pp goals in 14 games before Laine came onboard. He was really effective and the. We deferred everything to Laine. The PP stayed pretty mediocre ch the same percentage wise but the goals shifted from CC to Laine. Edit (7ppg in 23 games)

Cc only had 3 PP goals in 59 games afterwards…

you can definitely have a high skill guy in the high slot though. i think Suzuki would be great there. one of the Sedins (forget which one) was a mainstay in that spot

Yeah, his bread and butter is on that side of the ice.. putting him anywhere else on the PP isn't really making much of a use of him.

That's why I said earlier, just put Caufield to PP2 and then double shift him in Laine's spot as often as you can 5 on 5.

Laine's shot is amazing. When they actually set it up he's lethal. The problem is that's all he does on the PP. CC is great at moving the puck around. Even if he's not scoring he's at least helping drive the play. He's an awesome PP player. Just seems crazy to me that we wouldn't have him on the first unit.

If you're dressing Laine, you pretty much have to put him on PP1.. he's a detriment 5 on 5 and will cost Demidov minutes.

I don't see any other way right now.

All I can say about our highest paid player is that he needs to elevate his damn game and help this team, not hinder it.

His salary is irrelevant, he was a cap dump and negative value for a reason. The only question is how he can best be deployed to help win playoff games. PP1 is necessary. Would be nice to see him far, far away from Blackhole Newhook too, since they have zero chemistry but Laine himself is slow, brittle, and strange on the ice so I dunno what to expect.

No he's not. Someone posted the last shift they played last game before they were benched and Laine was absolutely beasting in defensive zone the whole shift, alone. He forced a turnover 3 times until they finally got it out of the zone (and Demidov had a shot as a result).

detriment, sure

Same thing with the Slaf hate, it gets irrational
