Whatever man. You have your thoughts on him....I have mine. You ate a lot of crow last spring but now have circled back to all of your original points you made about him. I will stick to my guns that Slaf will end up an impact player in this league.

I was 100% wrong about his not being able to develop in the NHL. He did, it wasn't too fast for him, and he showed it.

What didn't work about him for me is the same thing that bugs me right now. He seems to have all the tools but doesn't seem to put it together. From next season on there are NO excuses. All this "development isn't linear" and "they drafted him for what he can do when he's 24" stuff doesn't land when he was rushed at every opportunity and the team jumped at the first chance to give him a mega contract extension. He has to deliver the goods.

As Tyson says above ^^ players development is not linear. He has it in him to score at that 50 point pace and likely much higher. These bumps in the road are opportunities for development.

Time will be the ultimate arbiter in this matter.

Development is not linear but a decline is a decline and a pattern emerges when there are more slumps and lost periods than hot ones.

Under no circumstances in this moment would I trade Slaf.

He’s already shown he can play physical. It’s a big part of why we drafted him. He’s got some size, he’s got some great, he’s got good skill and he has vision. Putting it all together will take time.

But if you’re expecting him to play a Tkachuk style of game you’ll be disappointed. I don’t think k he’s going to be a big mean power forward who gets into fights. But I do think he’ll win a lot of board battles and use his size to his advantage.

Does anyone else believe that a players true potential can be unlocked or repressed depending on coaching style, team systems and environment they play in?

My biggest fear about everyone mailing it in on Slaf is we trade him to an environment where he becomes the next Colorado version of Mikko Rantanen.

Rants is but one example (I know the sample is small) of a player who seems to be repressed in Carolina.

Another player I suspect would look poor in certain systems would be Draisatl. It doesn't get talked about a ton around here....but it is a legit thing. Players perceived values are inflated or degraded at times simply by the system with which they are playing.

Another example is Drouin. Sure....stapled to MacKinnon. But some stat watchers will scream from the roof tops how he is reaching his true self. Maybe that is true.

I couldn't imagine how f***ing awesome Slaf would look next to MacKinnon.

Under no circumstances in this moment would I trade Slaf.

It can. The best example being Témou Selanne. Was awesome with the Jets and the Ducks. Then went to SJ and Avs where it dit not work at all specially with the Avs. Went back to Anaheim to finish his career and instantly had two of his best seasons in career.

Personally, it's not about his stats, at all (you mentioned stat watchers will scream, etc).

He's not a threat out there, nor does he even pretend to be a threat.

I thought KK was more of a threat offensively than Slaf on our team.

There was A LOT going on with Daigle for his career to shape out the way it did and a lot of it was off ice issues similar to the ones Drouin was going threw when he was in Montreal.

Whether he does or not doesn't really matter. Those 15 games aren't going to determine how good a player he's going to be. Him not pacing for this player or that player... it doesn't change much. I'm not saying I wouldn't have loved for him to be killing it and seeing him up with the best. But I also knew that things might take longer with this guy.
