Player Discussion Juraj Slafkovsky discussion

Slapped-Silly is just not a very mean person -- And it shows in his play on the ice. The physicality you will get from him, IMO is puck possession, maybe, à la Armia, but not aggression and checking will be more as part of that puck possession than as an intimidation force.

Opponents will never fear Slafkovsky barrelling down on them. In his first season, when he placed an overly aggressive hit on a player and got suspended for it, he came back to play and was a complete lamb out on the ice.

Slafkovsky seems --as mentioned by another -- to be more in the mold of a Latendresse than a Lindros (pick your 'L').

I think he should perhaps be tried out at C with this season now having been charred to death wit the last two losses before the 4-Nations break.

Caufield - Tzatziki - Dach
Armia - Slapped-Silly - Laine
Newhook - Beck - Dvorak
Anderson - Evans - Gallagher

Armia and Slapped-Silly should give two forwards that can protect and keep the puck long enough to get it to an open Laine for a shot.
Yes and no. I agree that he comes off a bit to nice on the ice at times, and that's frustrating for what he can do. You do also see the gamer side of him at times, not so much this year but when he wants to be a force, he's shown that too.

If we ever get back to the playoffs lol, I think that will be a huge eye opener on what the game turns into. I think that might bring out the best in him, and an opportunity for the mean streak to come alive. He needs to taste his own blood, before the dog can awake in him.. maybe haha.

At what age is it okay to consider him a bust?

Because right now, it seems like his ceiling is a 2nd line powerforward with 55-65pts max.
I want to see his mental maturity grow some more before labeling him a bust. To me it all has to do with confidence. He still looks like a kid that is scared to take the bull by the horns. Doesn't really drive the play. Always defers to his linemates when puck is on his stick..... Drive the net buddy! Take some risks, show us some dominance please.

Idk how long it will take but once he gets more confident in his frame, I fully expect to see more dog in him.

I'd like to see him get more physically engaged and aggressive in puck battles. He doesn't play big enough for his size to make an impact on his game. We need to see physical dominance from him to become a real force out there.

I was hoping to see him having a better year, but his performance is not too concerning for me yet. His growth will take time.

Would you trade him for Beckett Sennecke?

In a millisecond, but Slaf has negative trade value now due to his performance and current contract. It's a more of, what would you need to add to get a deal done. So if it's like an Owen Beck + 2nd, then yes. Anyways, I figure we hold onto him for another 1-2 years and then we'll end up swapping him for another player in a similar situation looking to restart.

Wondering the same. Laval is short on fwds and Slaf could use playing reps over drinking reps. He needs to take step forward and so I don't see it as punishment and might be more constructive than rest.

Kind of an underwhelming season so far for the # 1 pick, guess you can all blame me as I didn't send him his Christmas gift yet, my bad.

I agree with the angry/aggressive/more-dog comments. Slafkovsky has it in him. He just needs to pull a Bruce Banner and let his Hulkovsky emerge.

I keep thinking of that game against the Rangers. New York was playing dirty, getting away with obvious penalties, and Slafkovsky got angry. It was a beautiful thing. He was physically dominant, much stronger on the puck, scored a goal. There's a lot of runway left for this kid to learn how to channel that kind of focus without giving himself an ulcer.

Labelling him a bust is just plain stupid and anyone holding this opinion knows nothing about hockey.

He is struggling this season but he was fantastic in the second half of last season as a 19 year old kid.....to assert that he can not find that level again and build on it is beyond dumb.

Maybe. Or maybe it was a wake up call and he realized he’d better move his ass. Honestly, it’s not like Suzuki and Caulfield have done much in the past few games either. I don’t expect Jagr out there, but he can at least play a big, physical game and go to the net (which he’s done a few times providing a screen). I’d be more than happy with a 50 point power forward scoring 25 a year. As long as he’s a guy throwing his weight around. That’s huge for the smaller guys to be able to succeed.
The only way I can describe how he plays when he plays with Suzuki and Caufield is like he was starstruck.

Labeling him a sure fire hit is just as stupid, luckily most are doing neither, just pointing out he is not doing well.

Absolutes are always dumb but so is most of the criticism as it is twitter level hot takes..Even debating whether he is a bust is an entirely non intellectual discussion at such an early stage. He is the highest scoring 19 year old in the history of the franchise and could very well match or surpass those totals with a strong finish just one year later.

These boards are mostly embarrassing with intelligent, measured opinions sprinkled over the mountain of nonsense.

John LeClair is the comparable I’d use for Slaf, big body used for puck possession not a crash & banging power forward.

Like LeClair who was massively frustrating his first few seasons until “he figured it out”. Patience..

I get the sense Slaf will complement Demigod, now they only need a C like Cozens whose non stop motor will fit seamlessly between the two

LeClair was always a crash and bang player but Savard foolishly insisted on moving him to center and removing him from the board play that he was so dominant at. The following trade was a brain dead move just like the Chelios trade.
