More thoughts on the trade.

I think we got the better of the Nuks for sure I mean you just don't get a value contract 1C for peanuts and we kinda did. He has perhaps 2 good years left so that's our window until he becomes Zib.

As much as we all loved Fil for his attitude and his skill - which he showed recently, speed and stuck handling without finish is just blah. He's literally one more head shot from retirement or 3 months off. From a pure asset manage by perspective, this is a win.

The Mancini add was a no brainer. Bc of miller and Lindgren, he's going no where. This is the NYR we ain't got no room for yutes here.

The 1st makes sense since we don't have a clue how to pick in round 1.

Brann sucks. Hes another undersized "offensive dman" who isn't productive. Rather just have Jones to be that guy.

Jumping in this thread as a non-range fan. Chytil it’s a gust of wind away from another concussion. The pic isn’t worth as much as you think because you guys are gonna get a mid range pick. A center like this does not come along often in a trade. I think you did well here. I hope I’m wrong though!
 
The mental gymnastics being done to try to say this was a bad trade for the Rangers are something

Also, this shows the Rangers have no plan? They obviously had a plan to change the culture and they have done that. Trading for a potential 90-100 point center for pennies on the dollar coming off 2/3 ECFs, is a complete no brainer. Even if he’s 31 and about to die of old age like some think. We traded our crap that didn’t fit and added the best player in every deal we’ve made. Drury has crushed it since sent that memo. Now it’s up to the players. Mika & Kreider will be jettisoned if they don’t shape up. The new leadership of JT and Trocheck will be a much better influence in n our young guys going forward.

Yes, he's signed for 5 more seasons at 8M, essentially replacing Trouba
Yes, he was a locker room problem in Vancouver


But he's one of the best passers I've ever seen and Torts gave him the 'C' for one day back in 2011!
 
Don’t love Miller’s age, but this trade is a no-brainer.

This is probably the best 1C the team has had since Messier and they gave very little real value to get him.

I love Chytil. But if someone asks me who will have more points for the remainder of Miller’s contract, Miller or Chytil, I’d put money on Miller without blinking. If I were asked who is more likely to be healthy and in the NHL for the duration of Miller’s contract, I’d bet on Miller even faster.

There is a lot to admire and appreciate about Chytil. But viewing this from an asset perspective, moving Chytil’s always inherent injury risk is smart and somewhat of a relief.

Miller was 9th in points last season and even with the locker room turmoil this season, he is still near a PPG.

The fact that Miller already played here, waived to come here, and has a history with Tro – who I would say is as close as we have to a de facto captain – means Miller probably feels more at home here and less likely to be a headache.

Miller should also theoretically make Panarin more dangerous.

If they are on the same line, teams really can’t double-team / over-commit to either guy. If they are on separate lines, then opposition has to focus on covering scoring threats on two separate lines.

I can for sure understand anyone’s discomfort with Miller’s age.

Miller’s age bugs me also. But this team has not had a 1C of this caliber in ages. If he can be a bonafide 1C for a season or 2, and slide down to a lower role as he ages, he’d be relatively worth his cap hit. Especially since we acquired him at dimes on the dollar.

Part of why a team needs to continually inject young players into their lineups from year to year is to make the cap manageable. It's here where trading off top draft picks can come back to bite you but they're also the guys more likely to get bigger second and third contracts. Drafting well in the lower rounds really helps out a lot but when you have a lot of ELC and cheap second contract guys pushing hard to become NHL players you won't be able to keep them all nor should you want to. You try to figure then which are best to keep to hold on to but also where you have an excess of what you need and this is pretty much why a guy like Mancini can be moved. When the Rangers signed Borgen that locked up the right side for the foreseeable future and we still have Emery coming. Giving up the 1st rounder also hurts but we have several young forwards on ELC's who will be pushing for jobs on next year's team---Othmann, Berard, Perreault (if he signs), Laba (if he signs), Sykora, Chmelar etc. The cupboard isn't bare. It's been churning out players. Rempe and Edstrom for instance.

On the subject of how to build a championship team.....there is no single way. There are multiple ways to get that done. Sometimes the paths taken have similarities but there are always differences. I do think a team has to have defensive presence and at least very good goaltending. Your best players have to play like they're your best. It very much helps to have a player/two or three really step up and maybe someone completely unexpected. Playoffs are hard. Most players underperform their regular season numbers. There are also uncontrollable variables and for that a team needs some luck.
 
As much as I’m ‘meh’ on the longevity of JT, this was great value for us, less than I thought. Also very rongo that he should take his best buds spot. The other thing I like is that this season I have no faith in, but I think we should be a much better team next season, so I don’t give a shit about the 1st. Drury should keep wheeling and dealing with next season on his mind. If Laf and miller click that makes this such a fantastic trade. Get rid of bread for a haul and roll troch/miller/laf. Laf + Miller to PP also plz. Hoping Laf can further grow the non toxic pesty dickhead side of his game learning from a great one in miller.
 
I would still try to squeeze some draft, asset equity out of this team while they battle for a WC spot. Play the kids, let’s see what we have.

I think we could discharge Jones, Smith, Krieder, Vesey, Lindgren, and Domingue for something. In Krieders case I would love to get back a 2nd and a young LD like Bischel or Buium. Smith and Lindgren at 50% should get back decent returns as well.

Yeah I'm not even going to point to the teams that have epic failed (Buffalo) but look at some of the teams that have done it the "right" way and have been successful -

Carolina, Toronto, everyones favorite NJD team that is primed to get donkey punched in the 1st round this year. Teams built the "right" way that still have fatal flaws that they can't/won't overcome.

With the cap going bananas the next few years, we're going to see more than a few "young" guys hitting their RFA years who are suddenly not going to want to play for their small-mid market teams anymore and f*** load of players hit UFA. It's going to be a shit show and I don't think the league is prepared for it but as long as FO clears the space of the big 3, we're going to be right there for those guys (and we have the owner who can and WILL spend the money.)

For a team where fans complain that guys can't put the puck in the net, Miller has three (3) even strength goals this year to Fil's ten. So unless he was doing Trouba/Goodrow leaving levels of sulking over his situation in Vancouver, I'm not sure how much better it makes us at 5v5. And if that was the case, then maybe he's not this amazing leader that people here seem to think he is. Can he improve PP1? Possibly. But you know who else I think could have improved PP1? Fil. But he's a young guy who worked his ass off for the organization, so of course he's never even sniffed PP1 time this year.

And that's to say nothing of where we'll be in a couple of years, where our top 9 centers are all 33+ years old. Go take a look at the list of NHL centers who are 33+ and it's not a very pretty picture, unless you expect all these guys to suddenly become Sidney Crosby.

Zibanejad and Trocheck at 31 are both having down seasons and it’s possible we have already seen the best of them. Adding another 31 year old on top of that is just malfeasance. I don’t care if he had a 100 point season last year, did anyone think Mika would go from 91 points to 50 in less than 2 seasons? And he is younger than Miller will be in 2 years.

Time will tell if this was a pointless trade or not. My opinion is any rational hockey fan would see this team just doesn't have Cup potential, so Miller really doesn't change much at all. Especially if the team looks different next year.

Cup winning teams needs their lineups full with quality. Kreider and Mika are seemingly past the event horizon, so they are out of the running to contribute. Panarin, good, goalie good, Fox good, and now Miller should be "OK". Other than that, this team does not have the goods. That is it, the team has only 4 players that are "Cup quality".

So next year we will be better? But how much better? There is no projection for Laf or Cuylle to be TOP players or all-stars. The defense is bad, straight up BAD. Lindgren being moved and being replaced turns the odds from BAD to not-as-bad.

Young players take a long time on average to contribute unless you get insanely lucky. Trades for mid players will just be more mid players who might be slightly better.

Realistically, next year, this team will fight for a WC spot and not even guarantee it.

I really really hope not, but this trade really does nothing for Cup chances. Maybe make the playoff prospect this year a bit more attainable? OK, sure. Maybe a little bit more attainable next year for a WC? Sure again. But ultimately, pointless for any Cup run. Team needs a complete overhaul.
