Mixed feelings about this trade.

On its own, I think it's good value. Strategically from my perspective, I don't like it.

I've been saying for 3 years now that I didn't think we could ever win a Cup with a core of Panarin, Mika, and Kreider. They are too soft to create their own offense in a much defensively tighter playoffs and they don't play hard enough defensively. I think Drury knows it, however, we're hampered by all the no-trade clauses from the previous regime and some self-induced by Drury.

If it were up to me as a fan of the team, I would have tried to sell what I could and re-stocked the draft picks that Drury has given away like candy.

Obviously, Drury has a different agenda (and probably Dolan as well). Their agenda may not align with ours. He's playing to keep his job. He's never going to sell, so he's trying to re-tool on the fly. It is what it is no matter what a lot of us might think. We kind of just have to live with it and hope the re-tooling helps the team.

As far as the trade itself considering that we aren't going to sell off players, I think it's a great trade for the next few years. Miller is a legit top line player and a major upgrade from Chytil. Just last year we thought Chytil might be done from his concussions. This is an asset (sadly I must put it that way) that can lose all value with one more bad hit. The odds of him having another concussion are pretty high I think. It sucks giving up a first round pick, but I don't think it's going to hurt us that much because it shouldn't end up all that high.

As far as players go, I liked Chytil. I loved the pace he played with. I loved how he could carry the puck up ice with speed. I always rooted for him to score. However, I don't think his hockey sense was the best. He's lost on defense a lot of the time. I will root for him to stay healthy and do well. I thought he was very likeable.

Longer term, yeah, this trade can be problematic with an aging team unless Miller irritates the living daylights out of Mika and he agrees to waive his NTC.

I'm not 100% sure this is exactly "another run" at it so to speak. I think it's a bigger part of trying to change the core components of the team (that didn't get it done) while also hoping for another run with Panarin but also setting up a change in attitude and leadership for the future.
But yeah I do question doing that with a 31 year old player. With the cap going up so much though in coming years his cap hit and all will be just fine even if he doesn't stay at a 1C level, but really only if they can ditch Mika at this point

I don’t care for every forced comparison to our one modern cup.

The Miller trade means Drury is going to be trying to win for 3 more seasons at least. A lot can happen in that time. Panarin may leave, Kreider and Mika almost certainly will unless they turn their game around, and we have to make major decisions on KAndre, Lindgren and others.

So really it depends on how creative Drury is able to get without selling off every future asset we have. But I would be very surprised if this is the only major change. They’ll add by the deadline and likely reconstruct a veteran core around Miller and Trocheck rather than Panarin Kreider and Zib.

The big thing as ever is getting a Matheson or some sort of top pairing LHD. One star defensemen to replace Lindgren and we actually start to have an OK looking defense on paper again. Doubly if we can replace KAndre with someone who fits our system better.

X-Fox
Miller-Borgen
Brannstrom-Schneider
Vaak

It’s really the one glaring hole at the top that requires attention. No playing Vaak with Fox and praying it works

Read into it what you will. "Future core" "good friends with Trocheck". For me, their plan is another retool to extend the "competitive" window another couple seasons with Shesterkin locked up. Confident Zibanejad, Kreider, Panarin will not be part of it, one way or another.

This team hasn't earned the right to be trading future assets for another run at it. Sorry. While I like JT Miller, this is a lazy desperate move by a GM and organization that has painted themselves into a corner.

Name the last Ranger player not named Panarin or Jagr, both shoe-in HOF'ers, to score 100 points.

Messier? Leetch? More HOF'ers.

They don't grow on trees. Miller has done it. Chytil won't. The 21st OA in next years draft won't. Miller is an asset that is more valuable than either of those. This is a smart hockey trade and makes Mike expendable this summer if need be.

This about a lot more than "another run at it". It's trading sixty cents for a dollar. You do it every time.

This is a robbery but some people want to rebuild forever. JT Miller’s body is younger than Chytil’s at this point. We were presidents trophy winners and 2 wins away from the cup final last year. This is basically the same team plus JT Miller. He is the exact type of player and personality that our team needs to shake things up and grow a spine.

Listen I was hesitant too but this is a 100 point #1 center with term on a great contract. The return is very obviously a steal for the rangers organization. Rutherford himself basically admitted it would be as such. You need to be opportunistic, these players are not often available. Further, this player brings a heavy game and tons of compete. He’s not a country club guy. The 20/93 era is coming to an end and this is a big step towards that, which is a huge win.

Brendan Othmann should get a look on Millers wing. He plays a heavy game and that could be a great pairing, maybe with Cuylle on the other side.

good thing we're not looking for value in return with our NMC bozos

I don't think you can know that, honestly.

Mika gets a lot of shit around here, and deservedly so for this year, but if he were traded for picks or futures it would've left a HUGE hole in the Rangers lineup. Lottery team size hole.

JT kinda addresses that. It's a smart trade.

excatly , now that we have JT who is the same age, plays the same position, is much better and not a little bitch, we have zero need for Zib anymore.

Also, Daily faceoff has him wearing #8, is this confirmed?

That's why I like the trade. The only thing Mika has over JT is the PK.

Now, FWIW, the Rangers might have among the best center depth in the league 1-4. As crazy as that sounds.

The key is can you be economical or is Drury just going to melt every asset to change players and hope it works.

If the actual real goal is to move on from Panarin, you have to consider trying to trade him. That's a tall ask.

Absolutely....its better than signing Raataneen for 14 mil.....Rising payroll is our strength....We need elite top players and te time has come to put a little pizzaz into NHL player movement. New CBA will have 1 maybe 2 compliance buyouts. Lets retool and think big..Connor Matthews...Brady

It's up to lavi to properly distribute the centermen minutes because there's now a bona fide top center. Because he's not dealing with a Chytil anymore. He can't hide behind giving Z even comparable minutes to Miller. There would be questions.

It’s not the same team because all of their core players are worse with the exception of Fox. That’s not even debatable. The names are the same but the players are not.
