Something like "the problem you have when your PR staff is a carnival is that you consistently let narratives spiral out of control. The Canucks are letting speculation run rampant about Miller and it's entirely unhelpful."

Shane O'Brien told some rando at the Roxy what was going down? That is completely contrary to what I heard. I bumped into one of the Sedins (not sure which one) at the Richmond IKEA and I immediately got up in his face about the JT Miller business while he was perusing bed linens. He told me, unequivocally, that Miller will never play another game in a Vancouver uniform and they are actively shopping him, willing to retain 30% just to get rid of him. Apparently Miller trashed the locker room after Petey beat him in a round of "Uno" and Miller couldn't accept that Petey cried out "Uno!" a half second before him. Sedin (not sure which one) said they're close to a deal with Boston that would see Marchand & Zadorov coming our way, but they're also looking at Stamkos and Tavares.

JT takes a couple weeks off for a much needed physical and mental reset & it’s a big deal. Stone takes 1/4 of the regular season off to rest and provide cap relief but that’s ok because he’s a veteran? Miller’s 31 & Stone’s 32 btw. Load management is becoming more common in the NHL..

Agreed. I’ve seen several other low level media outlets taking complete speculation and running with headlines of “Insiders Believe JT Miller was forced to sit out due to rift” and similar.
The fans then regurgitate and perpetuate it and there we go with the toxic media & fans.
Hint: If you’re one of the ones reciting your own and others’ speculation as reality; you are the problem, you are the toxic fans ppl are referring to.

Normalize taking time for for a ‘mental reset’, and not made up reasons.
Historically, especially in the sports world, people would be discredited and viewed as weak for paying attention to mental health, with sometimes tragic consequences. This needs to change.

How else can they tell it like it is, if what it is is that he’s left for a mental health break?
Do we need to sit in on his therapy sessions? The only ppl to blame here is shitty media and fans who need to look at themselves IMO
the problem is that 'a much needed physical and mental reset' is basically unprecedented in the nhl and the only source for it is "insiders" not the team itself
the team can't operate in an information vacuum if they want to control the narrative otherwise you just have a bunch of "sources say" and no one knows what to believe
The confusion is in the language barrier, for the Swedes Uno means friend but to an American it means enemy

This is unprecedented in the league for a player of any relevant profile.
If he was trying to play through his issues and struggling on the ice you would be calling him names.
If they wanted to not have speculation they should have handled the PR better.

From the beginning, they should've been tight and stuck to a simple story: "JT Miller is on leave of absence indefinitely for personal reasons." PERIOD.

What is the reason for Miller's departure? "It is a personal matter we are not at liberty to discuss."
When will he return? Will he return? Is he being traded? "JT is an integral part of the team and our long-term vision, and he will definitely return. We do not currently have a timeline."
Did the coach kick him off the team? Did he blow up on a teammate? "We will absolutely not entertain rumors or wild speculation."
NO MORE QUESTIONS
They've tripped up so much in their messaging that they've fueled speculation and rumors by not being tight, succinct and decisive about it.
Long-term solution league wide if this is mental health related:
if a player is presenting with mental health issues
(1) have him properly diagnosed by a psychiatrist
(2) put a treatment plan in place that the player is bound to follow
(3) allow teams to place players on injured reserve if they are properly diagnosed and following a treatment plan
This ensures that players are getting the help they need, and that teams are not abusing the IR.
The best way to normalize mental health issues in general is to recognize that they are medical conditions that can be as serious as any physical injury or illness.

Rutherford just woke up from his nap and is now on the warpath.
The criticism of the Canucks PR department is kind of funny to me. Sure, I guess there's a world where they do something that stops fans and media from speculating, but this is Vancouver. They've said before that they're committed to being honeest with the fans, so if they played this off as an injury, and Miller left the team, it would get out and people would be all over the team for trying to hide a bad situation. I think what they said at the outset was clear enough without giving a play by play of Miller's problems leading up to him stepping away. What else do people expect them to say?
I greatly enjoy angry Rutherford.
It comes across more as “disappointed grandpa” than anger most of the time.

A: What TF is a mental reset? Did anyone use this phrase before Rick Dhaliwal tweeted it? It's such a perfectly vague throw away statement that means nothing specific. I've never heard it uttered by anyone until someone whispered it in Dhaliwal's ear.
B: IF JT "stepping away for personal reasons" (teams words) is about mental health (I'm skeptical), wouldn't the way to "normalize" the situation be for the player to make a statement about the situation and own the narrative?
When Simone Biles pulled out of the Olympics because "the mental wasn't there" she issued a detailed press release to explain the situation and why she did what she did. It nipped the speculation right in the bud.
If the player wasn't prepared to do this, then why on earth didn't the team just put him on the IR for whatever nagging injury kept him out of most of the preseason?
None of the way this was handled makes any sense if the goal was to minimize people talking about it.
