Not sure where the Pavelski comparison comes from other than wishful thinking. Pavelski is probably the best guy in the game at tipping pucks. He is someone who stands in front and either will tip/deflect a puck in or get a rebound. That is how he puts up goals at his age. Not so sure that is millers game so not sure how they can be compared.

Miller will be a deadline rental or Vancouver will keep him for their playoff push.

Some call it irony, some bad faith.
It's gotta be bad faith then, because I see no irony here:

i·ro·ny1
/ˈīrənē/

noun

  1. the expression of one's meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite, typically for humorous or emphatic effect
  2. a state of affairs or an event that seems deliberately contrary to what one expects and is often amusing as a result.
  3. a literary technique, originally used in Greek tragedy, by which the full significance of a character's words or actions are clear to the audience or reader although unknown to the character.

There are too many JT Miller threads but this is probably the only one that needs to exist. Vancouver basically has 4 options with Miller:

1. Keep and extend.
2. Trade with expected extension in place.
3. Trade as deadline rental.
4. Keep and lose in free agency.

Right now 1 and 2 will be front and center for Vancouver, and their are reports indicating there is a lot of interest from other teams in #2. Miller can't technically be extended before the draft, but if Vancouver gives permission teams can talk to him before hand to see if it's feasible and/or a handshake agreement can be arranged. Most upcoming free agents do resign with their current team after all.

In my opinion there are 3 contracts that can be used as a guideline to a Miller extension right now: Hertl, Zibanajed, and Landeksog. A year old doesn't really matter because you just fit it into the same structure, these are contracts that pay around $10M or so the first few years then back dive. Fans will back right away from these sorts of contracts but it's the NHL GM's that actually make the decisions and Miller will get his, meaning it's not reason to 'devalue' him.

at his age I don’t see the 8th year really being that attractive. It’s likely just easier to trade him and let them sort out a contract

I think Vancouver and Columbus make good trade partners if the Blue Jackets are looking to jump into contention

Columbus < Horvat (extended), Miller (extended)

Vancouver < Johnson, #6, #12 + Voracek and/or Nyquist for salary reasons

I think one of the Florida teams make a lot of sense. Florida as a trade and sign. Tampa as a rental bring Miller back for 1 season

I don't know which side of this you're vested in, but I don't see it being a bad trade for Vancouver at all. I guess ideally we'd have an RHD as part of the return. We lose two centers and get one back either immediately or for next year (I don't know when Johnson's time in the NCAA is expected to be over). I mean to complete the armed robbery we're committing, Boqvist would also be of interest.

That being said, I don't know what incentive Columbus should really have for this, or any deal based on it..

Is Columbus in a spot where they're now going all in? This seems like a move for a team who's a piece or two away from competing for the cup, not a team like Columbus. You a Vancouver fan? Because it doesn't seem like you really gave it much thought from Columbus's perspective.

I can't really see Vancouver moving both Miller and Horvat, that would severely deplete their center depth and that's with many believing that Pettersson shouldn't even be considered a center.

Columbus is an interesting destination for Miller though. He's from Ohio, although he grew up in nearby Pensylvania so I can see him being open to signing longterm. If Columbus feels he can help them turn the corner then maybe something based around their 1st and one of their young RH'ed d-man gets the talks started.

Miller has gotten better every year, Could be a Pavelski Situation with him.
He is showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon, If he signs for at least 6 Years.
4 of those years would be as a big time producer.
The difference between Pavelski and Miller is that Pavelski's strengths have never been his tools, they have always been his toolbox.

Miller's strengths are his compete and his tools, while his toolbox has always been the area of his game that was not as strong as the rest.

I do not think their games will age the same.

Johnson is from Vancouver, so I feel like the Canucks would push for his inclusion in the deal

How does Miller produce at ES and how is he defensively?

If his jumps in production coincide with lots of PP points with a legendary performer like Hughes I would be wary of signing Miller long term as your top guy.

Toronto offers you three first round picks and 5 cap dumps, take it or leave it. There, got that out of the way.
So, let me get this straight. You are offering 3 First Round Picks and 5 cap dumps - Matthews, Marner, Nylander, Tavares, and Rielly!?!

We have a deal!

But even with those two players, I still don't see them as real contenders. I realize you're targeting their high picks and recent top draft pick, which a contender isn't going to have, but it really doesn't make sense for them.

I think a playoff contending team that has an earlier than expected exit might be in the market?
