Recalled/Assigned: JT Miller and Brandon Mashinter up; Ferriero down (2/18: Mashinter up with Powe out)

Whether the Rangers are close to a decision -- or have made one already -- they are not revealing their hand just yet. What we do know is that the team likes what they see in the young, physical forward.

“He’s strong underneath the hash marks, both offensively and defensively. He has a ton to learn defensively but I like his willingness, I do,†Tortorella said. “I like his willingness to get to pucks and stay strong on pucks -- that’s a big part of our game we’re working on and concentrating on.â€

In his NHL debut against the Devils last Tuesday, Miller was arguably the team’s most dynamic forward on the ice. In his first game at the Garden just two days later, Miller tallied twice to help the team knock off the Islanders on home ice.

But Tuesday’s performance in the team’s 4-3 shootout victory over the Bruins was not his finest.

“He’s a 19-year-old kid, playing center-ice -- a lot of reads down low, a lot of defensive responsibilities. He’s going to have some bumps,†Tortorella said. “I sill think he had some shifts where he was strong on the puck and did some good things there.â€

Stop coaching Pat carved up Miller in his blog and in a chat today. He thinks Miller should be assigned to the AHL and the Rangers shouldn't bring him up at all this season.

No, I don't see Miller staying up the rest of the season. I think they send him down before tomorrow night's game. I also do not expect Boyle to be traded since he is a forward who kills penalties and the Rangers are thin on both fronts.. Everyone remember, being able to scratch a forward and still field a top 12 is a luxury. Just because a guy's scratched doesn't mean he's being shipped out of town. I'm not sure where that rumor started

Tough room.

Rangers have to make a critical decision tomorrow. If JT plays tomorrow then one year of his ELC is officially burned. I don't see them sending him down, but you never know.

Tough room.

Pat Leonard would have more credibility, if he said they should send him own after 6 games. Why are we sending him down if he has 2 more games? Unless he's such a huge liability, but he isn't.

let the kid play.. in all honestly if we burn a year so what!! the kid has to earn his playing time and next contract.. you have to look at his development and hes been playing great.. He's only going to get better and hes playing on a line right now with a proven player and winner/leader in Callahan... Hes going to have ups and downs and amazing plays and disappointing plays.. thats how the game is and hes 19.. Hes playing better on the big club then with the whale..

and in regards to Boyle.. he will either be in for halpern or Asham.. either one of them and I could prob see Halpern before asham.. just bc torts loves having Jam and toughness and if someone needs to throw down Asham fits that bill...

If Miller plays (6) games then his contract does not slide. He has (1) more game. If he gets sent down he can be recalled on an emergency basis for another game later in the season. I think we will see that happen.

What's the point of bringing him up in some random game this season? Why not just give him 1 more game? I know he had a mediocre game yesterday but he has some sort of rhythm now. You send him down and bring him up in 20 games, he's practically starting over.

Miller has had defensive lapses throughout and last night represented his most glaring deficiencies there, particularly how much of a liability he becomes on longer shifts. This is not to put him down. These are normal, difficult adjustments and overall he has played very well. I also could be wrong that Miller will be sent down. Maybe he's scratched Thursday; maybe he's not. But you have to go back and watched last night's replay to see just how big a liability he became on a couple of those shifts. As for Boyle being overrated, I don't think he's overrated at all. I think everyone sees Boyle exactly for what he is, and I believe when he's playing well his consistency, toughness and mindset fit this team and help make it what it is

You can tell he isn't an HF regular.

I was saying after the next game send him down. After that he can be called up on an "emergency basis" and still not burn a year off his ELC.

For how long can they call him up then? Anyway, I want to see another game. Though the Isles won't be a great representation of where his game is. But the Bruins are not a great representation either. How many teams are as deep as them? Maybe if he played all season this was a game in the last game of the season it would have been different, but this is a 19 year old killed playing game 4 against one of the top contenders for the Stanley Cup. He had 2 very good games. One decent game. One not so great game. We shouldn't pretend like he played like a HOFer, but let's not pretend like he's been complete garbage either.

Where did I say he was garbage?

They can call him up for (1) game at a time on an emergency basis.

You didn't. It was an exaggeration. It's just I see people panicking about 1 bad game. I'm sure Gretzky has had bad games.

Ah, alright, just making sure.

I just don't see him as 100% ready quite yet. He has shown flashes. No need to rush him. If he shows he is more ready after another 15 games in the AHL, bring him back up. The contract for me isn't the issue. Better to be overly patient than rush him.

Here we are in a 3 game winning streak, should be on a 6 game winning streak barring some sort of letdown and all I can think about is whether Miller will be sent down. I've been worrying that either Miller gets sent down or he has hit a wall. Either way my dream of having a team that can skate and pass and is 3 deep (actually 4) may go down up in smoke.

That sucks, bro.
