Roy is such an enigma. He has the look of a top 6 player at times and at other times he looks like a guy who will never establish a firm role.

His demeanour on the ice is easy to cheer for. I'd like to see him evenutally earn a spot. Not sure we have the long term room though.

Roy is part of the reason. Again, the way he plays (doesn’t carry the puck much) makes him look useless but his little touches are the grease in the engine.

He’s a great guy to play with guys like Anderson, Heineman, Newhook, who are fast players with bad sticks and low to mid IQ.

And he’s responsible defensively.

Something we already knew. He can't coast for a second which has always been a problem.
The fact that his line is chipping in is primordial because they will give up goals.

Odd. Apparently you can score goals by going to the net. At least roy realizes this. Both his goals were scored kn the paint. Not highlight reels but thats how you score in big games

Crossing that red line is all that matters, ask Brendan Gallagher who has scored 235 during his career and not many were pretty.

Roy and Newhook had great chemistry last season. I always liked Roy. It's sad how so many people turned on this guy so quickly.

We should (will) have better options going forward. If we don't, our heralded re-build isn't proceeding as well as many here expect.

Unfortunately it’s just a numbers game for Roy with the Habs. He’s lost in the shuffle long-term and I don’t think he really deserves to be stuck in the AHL another full season. You used to be able to leave guys down there for a while, like Plekanec, but there’s more teams and opportunities now that he’ll likely want to go elsewhere.

That is the story of his hockey career, so far. lol I remember watching him in junior and not understanding how he could score so many goals while looking so underwhelming. But he understand the game.

I think Newhook is ideally a core part of a high energy 3rd line that has 2 other guys similar to him.

He might not score much but the amount of chaos he creates on the ice and the pace he sets are valuable, provided that there's other guys on his line who can match his pace.

Laine obviously isn't really up to Newhook's speed right now. It could work if Newhook passes back from one of his rushes in order for Laine to take a shot, but he doesn't really have those kinds of playmaking abilities. He likes to just dump the puck at the net and hope something good happens. It works better when there's someone like Roy crowding the net in order to take advantage of a rebound or a loose puck.

Laine is like long range artillery while Roy and Newhook both work better in close quarters.

The better are his line mates, the better he will be good, because he will understand their game. I am gonna get several bricks throw to me, but i think that he would be a great fit to play with Demidov, himself a high IQ hockey player. Once in the offensive zone, opposite players won't have any clue on what will happen on the ice. I also think that a passionate player as Demidov will help Roy to play faster, and to be more implicated in the game.

I remember back in the day Nords fans saying that Goulet was lazy (I believe the term was grosse vache/big cow). I was a Habs fan but I thought this was so damn unfair. I wished the Habs have had such a pure goal scorer back then.

Just like Roy, we should welcome that there are players with different style and way to approach the game. Cause nowadays that is rare.

The Canadiens will have better options at forward with Demidov, Hage, Beck, Kapanen, Florian Xhekaj, Davidson, Sawyer, etc. currently in the pipeline, owning multiple high draft picks over the next few years and cap space that will allow Hughes to be aggressive in the free agency market. The competition for roster spots will be fierce as the Canadiens' re-build accelerates.

Better times are coming. And coming fast.

His positioning awareness has been great. He's been blocking a lot of shots in the defensive zone or preventing plays in the neutral zone. Right fit for that line

Why not consider him with Evans and Heineman next year? With a role on the PK and PP2. We can afford a slower player on that line - Armia already is one to be fair - and he would likely inject some offense to their good forechecking game.

I hate the usual discourse that you need fast/low IQ player down the lineup. You need a bottom 6 who wins the possession battle, and it looks like with Roy on the ice we mostly win the possession battle (although to be fair, with controlled opposition mostly)

If Roy is in the top 9, that top 6 better be extra special

I think that's a misconception.

A higher IQ player doesn't necessarily get more elegant goals, they might just get a larger number of garbage goals, by knowing when to roll in the mud.
