Player Discussion Joshua Roy

While I haven't been that impressed with Roy's call up so far, I haven't been terribly discouraged either. He's going to have to figure out how to contribute at the NHL level with his slow foot speed, and there's no guarantee he can do that. He's made the odd nifty play, but he needs to do more in a shift. Specifically, he will absolutely need to play with more confidence on the boards and help the team win battles there to keep possession.

Beck looked a lot better to me. The skating ability is such a big difference maker.

Will he be suiting up against Ottawa? if he shows the same what he has shown, can they potently try another player that deserves a shot and that can contribute more effectively.?

I read recently, that he says he wants to model his game after John Tavares..............oh my.
He isn't a PPG guy in the AHL, but thinks he can be in the NHL like Tavares???

Boy does this kid have to get it going..........there is some talent there, but it looks like he has zero interest?

I don't think you understand what the word model means.

Tavares is one of the slowest forwards in the league. But he produces and is great at faceoffs. And the reason he produces is because he goes to the net hard. Roy is slow, but doesn’t produce, doesn’t take faceoffs, and doesn’t go to the net.

So what exactly is he modelling his game after? The bad skating?

Would love to see the kid prove us wrong, and get it going.......but he seems to have zero hustle and effort.......looking for the play to come to him so to speak.....
He has some nice hands, but................
He'll either figure out he has to hustle and get more explosive with his skating, or he won't. Good news is that St Louis and the management team seem like they are elite at developing even the older players, so I am cautiously optimistic for our young players like him.

Side burns and hair cut is my guess.

If Roy hasn't figured out what he needs to work on by now, he'll never make it. His skating has always been what's holding him back. That and some effort, they're related

He is trying to adjust to the speed of things and it shows. I don't know if it's just his skating or if it's his decision making that is lacking. He needs more of a motor if he wants to take the next step. If he could catch a break in one of these games, a garbage goal or an assist on a goal it would give him more confidence.

He seemed more comfy in the second half of Saturday's game and might just be in on some scoring tonight.

Or Olivier Fortier 2.0... He's his agent anyhow ah.
Olivier Fortier never played a single game in the NHL and his best AHL season was 20 points. He also never played in the u20. His best season in junior was 64 points. That's like the worst comparison i've seen in a while.

Hudon is a good one. PLayed a few game in the NHL. Had success in the AHL. Played for u20.

2.0 implies improved, nevertheless Roy is just as useless.

That's a massive improvement. More like 20.0

NHL

Roy : 9 points in 30 games
Fortier : 0 points in 0 games

AHL

Roy : 67 points in 87 games (0.77 ppg)
Fortier : 37 points in 138 games (0.26 ppg)

u20

Roy : 19 points in 14 games
Fortier : 0 points in 0 games

Junior

Roy : 297 points in 216 games (1.37 ppg)
Fortier : 161 points in 205 games (0.78 ppg)

Fortier retired from hockey at 23 years old they are nothing, absolutely nothing alike not even remotely close.

I'd have liked to have seen him with us all year but the team was such a tire fire at the start that the AHL was probably the best place for him. Just wish we had a good center to pair him with now. Breaking into the NHL is hard. It takes time and I don't know that we have the patience for him. Two years ago the timing would be better. We NEEDED offense badly. But now we've got a real first line. Demidov is coming, Laine is in the lineup... where does he fit? The team wants to make the playoffs going forward and development is becoming secondary.

I love the potential of this player but I don't know that he's going to go to the NHL with the Canadiens. And I'd prefer we give him a shot somewhere else than just having him die on the vine.

I hope he improved down the stretch. I'm rooting for him.

He is a 5th round pick so not much of a problem with him spending time in the AHL honestly. As long as we give him games here and there which we did last year and this year it's fine. Place will be open soon I don't think KH will go on a re-signing spree like some fans are hoping so he'll have his shot if he listen to the coach in the AHL.

The negativism toward him and others prospects like Slaf and Rainbacher is just ridiculous and not based on any facts whatsoever. With the junior career Roy had (much, much, much better than Fortier) he's already a good 5th round pick. It's very rare for 5th round picks to have such a good junior career. He's also doing fine in the AHL. Most 5th rounders don't make it and they rarely have such an impact with their u20 team (if they even make the team).

That's a bad take.

First, I don't know why you're talking about production when Roy has barely played in the NHL. Outside the NHL, Roy has put up great numbers, so him wanting to model his game after a top 6 talent makes a lot of sense. Also, only a few players end up as good or better than the player they modelled their game after.

Second, modeling your game after someone doesn't mean you are the exact sort of player. Is Hutson dumb for modelling his game after Makar when he doesn't have his shot or skating ability?
Both Roy and Tavares are not fast skaters, but they are smart, have great vision, shot, and hands. The plays they make don't really come from their skating ability.

I agree. From the moment he stepped onto the ice you had a lot of posters saying he sucks etc... it's brutal. But that's what we do here. Dach isn't hurt, he's lazy. Roy isn't young, he sucks. Reinbacher was the wrong pick and sucks etc...

But he’s not like him at all is what I’m saying. Tavares has an uncanny vision and ability to be in the right place at the right time due to incredible hockey sense. He’s also never afraid to pay the price to complete a play. He’s one of the best at using his body to position himself between the puck and an opponent.

I don’t see that with Roy. I see a kid who thinks he is smarter but that’s compared to AHL players. In the NHL he’s shown to be nothing special. So until he plays more physical, of which he never does, he can’t make the claim as it’s the bread and butter of JT’s game.

That's not surprising considering he's played like 15 games...

I don't know if Roy can make the jump. He has limitations or he wouldn't have been picked in the 5th round. Tavares was a first overall so it's not really a comparable.

But Roy has overdelivered every step of the way. At certain points he's struggled but he's made the adjustments and succeeded. Now he's at the very last -and toughest - level. Of course it's going to be hard to do it and maybe he can't. But we're not making it easy. He's playing with Nehwook and Laine. Not exactly great at 5 on 5 hockey.

I just wish we had a center we could throw in there beyond Suzuki who could help bring him along. Honestly though, there just might not be a spot now. Laine and Demidov will be the 2nd line wingers. So where does he go? Maybe with Heineman and Evans? That's the only place I can see.
