Does Norris have value with that contract? IMO the Sens would need to take back bad contracts and (or) eat a lot of his salary. And five years of retention seems too long.

TBH I'm not sure.

For some teams he definitely has negative value. I could see someone paying something for him, but I don't think it would be significant.

I don't think the return will be an equivalent player. I think the Senators will want to fill both the middle 6 C and #4-5 D spots with the trade.

I also think that a big part of the value coming to Ottawa will simply be getting out of the Norris contract. They have very little cap flexibility moving forward and clearly want to make changes to the lineup that Dorion and Melnyk built.

The return is going to be laughed at by people who don't understand that aspect. It will be something like Norris for ROR+Lauzon or Norris for Granlund+Ceci rather than Norris for Jiricek.

I certainly hope they get back a young star defenseman, but I doubt it works out that way. The value in the deal for the Senators is simply getting out of the risk of the contract.

Idk that Karl is actually the RD Ottawa needs exactly, but I would still do this just due to nostalgia

Never want to see Karlsson on a Sens jersey again unless it's during his retirement. His defensive play has deteriorated and he is not worth the price tag.

I feel there's a side to Norris we haven't seen yet. Only his injuries will stop him. He will otherwise put up some excellent seasons well worth his contract.
