Proposal: Josh Norris to Van

I'm in, from Vancouver's standpoint. Why does Ottawa entertain this though?
Continued Injury Issues, expressed intrest to get out of his long term contract for a while now, and cap flexibility.

He is obviously worth more than that but with him not being able to stay healthy for extended stretches and a long term deal, I think the return if Norris gets traded is going to be pitiful.

I mean, yeah, if that means he's worth Hoglander, Soucy and a 2nd to Ottawa, I'd be all kinds of in. Something tells me other Ottawa fans will not react positively to the proposal though, even with the reasons you've laid out.

3 shoulder surgeries, a reconstructed left shoulder (his shooting hand), and has been pacing around 50 points the last 2 seasons. He doesn’t exactly have a ton of value, especially at $8M.

Ottawa is better off just keeping him and hope his value rises. His value is around a 2nd round pick and a prospect at most right now.

I know they won’t, but Hoglander has a history of success under Green, and Soucy is great depth on defence for this season.

I think Senators fans need to temper their expectations a bit with the return on Norris. Great player when healthy. But like the post below me has illustrated he’s seldom, that. The best ability to have is availability. Norris doesn’t have that.

If Norris is going to VAN, Boeser and an extension are likely coming back. But I don't see them trading Norris tbh
I can get why Senators fans want this, but I don’t see the extension as realistic in any sense. Why would he sign in Ottawa? He’ll get more than Norris’ deal.

Agree completely - a second round pick and players to somewhat match salary’s.

While that is certainly what your offer is

The issue with this trade proposal is that Ottawa doesn’t get anything in this deal. They grab a healthy scratch in Hoglander who has 3 more years at 3M and is closer to being a buyout candidate than anything. So all in all they save 5M but they also need to go and acquire or sign a replacement for Norris.

Then:

- They don’t have assets to trade for a replacement and just traded away a good player for nothing.
- Who can you sign for 5M$? The cap is going up 30M$ in the next 3 years. Soon your prototypical 40-45 pts 3rd line center will be making 6M+ a year. Tarasenko just signed for 5M and Perron for 4M. That’s before we learned the cap numbers will rise significantly.

There’s a reason why all Nucks fans are open to this and not many Sens fan would do the deal. It’s because it’s a no brainer for Vancouver and the deal is tilted completely. You get rid of your leftovers and throw the patented 2nd rounder and are expecting to get young, defensively responsible, goal scoring top 6 center for literally nothing.

A team trading for Norris would be taking risk for sure but Ottawa needs to get a good well rounded 40pts middle 6 player in a deal like that and they are not getting that here. No one is expecting the moon, but this is a bad offer to be straight with you.

Soucy is not a need at all in the deal. We already have 3 better LHD and 2 better RHD. If we want a bottom lair RHD we will throw a mid round pick at a team at the deadline and get this over with.

Keep in mind that Ottawa is trying to win now so trading Norris is definitely possible but it would need to come with some value to Ottawa. I can see multiple teams dying for a center besting this offer very easily.

As a Canucks fan I'd rather acquire pinto

I'm sure you would.

Well, pretty easy to just keep him then.

His value can only go up with the cap as newer contracts for centres become more expensive. It's not like his injury issues are a secret.

As a Van fan I know I would make this deal 10/10 times which I have learned means that it cant be desirable for Sens fans?

The only way I could see Ott doing this is if they believe 2 of the following 3 pretty significantly.

1. Norris' injuries are much more concerning than meets they eye

2. Hoglander has the ability to not only get back to last year's stats, but actually take yet another gear.

3. Soucy is not only going to be able to stabilize their corps from the bottom up, but also provide some leadership they may desire.

Listen if I'm wrong, I'm happy to be wrong, and I'd certainly make the deal but I'm not sure...

Neither of the three pieces VAN gives up are all that enticing, but there's value there overall.

Problem is OTT is pushing for the playoffs and this makes them worse. It only really makes sense if they're able to flip this (or add to it) to land a winger to replace Norris and play with Stutzle.

What about Garland?

Due to Norris’ current health, I’d rather spend assets on Cozens.

The only reason I’d do this as a Canucks fan is if it gets Quinn Hughes to re-sign.

I’d also offer Quinn’s brother, Luke, $11.5m this off-season to try and get him (and make sure Quinn is staying).

Why not just swap Norris for Cozens? If Norris is done this season, the Sabres will tank even further and otherwise get a 2C.

Willander has to be coming back.

First and foremost, I don't know that Soucy waives his NTC for Ottawa. Second, if this is the value Norris has right now, the Sens are better off keeping him and hoping he can turn things around.

He's actually has a reasonable buyout. So in the event he struggles next season to, then that's an option the following year if his value tanks any further.

Basically, there's zero need for the Sens to dump him.
