I could see the ducks and leafs swapping some players down the road but nothing significant until the season is over. Ducks want to win now and have a team that can do it. The ducks have a stockpile of good young d men but if injuries occur they can cover these spots internally amongst d and not have to go out their and pay an arm and a leg for some veteran going into the playoffs.

Given their cap situation and need for a forward or two, Ducks should consider offers for any defensemen not named Lindholm. Prior to the season, I thought Fowler was the best trade option, but given how well he's played, I have reconsidered. I'd rather trade Vatanen, but that would be hard since he just signed.

But in any trade made at this point of the season, the ducks need to be a better team THIS year. That means the trade needs to bring back an affordable top level forward or two who can contribute immediately. Kapenen is a nice prospect, but there is no reason to trade Fowler for him given those paramaters. If the ducks want to trade for Kapenen (or a player like him), they'd be better off trading Vats or one of their defensive prospects.

If the ducks fall out of contention, then at the deadline they can revisit the return in a trade or trades. But in any event, I think Fowler gets more at the deadline than Kapenen. Any team trading form him gets him for two playoff runs.

Exactly why Manson for Kapanen doesn't make sense right now.

In the off-season though the Leafs wouldn't want to give up Kapanen (who expansion draft exempt) for Manson.

For this season I see the Ducks just bringing in a veteran winger with a digestible cap hit in the hopes that he can find some temporary spark.

Think names like Vanek, Hudler, Gionta, Stafford.

confused, do you mean that we take Stoner and retain on JVR or take Stoner out of the deal and retain on JVR instead?
He is saying

Stoner + Montour

For
JVR at whatever reduction will make him cost the same as stoner's contract.

No need for corrado, that being said prob still short a draft pick from anahiem side, I'd say prob Toronto would get their 2nd back if this was the deal so

JVR
For
Montour stoner and Toronto 17 2nd round pick

Don't think many of these types of trades get done during the season, but before the expansion draft there will be lots.

Leafs are in a good position to pick up another teams fourth Dman.

For example, Dman Ellis of Preds would be the fourth Dman protected by Nashville or do they want to protect 7 forwards and 4 Dmen.

Maybe Ellis for Carrick and draft exempt Johnson and Valiev could be a deal

Manson for draft exempt Valiev, Lindberg Johnson.

That gets interesting from a leafs point of view. It's a lot of salary but its all up before we need cap space

I think Manson is more along the lines of what we need, but Montour's upside is intriguing

Something worth looking at

To be honest, if the best you could get for JVR with retention was Montour and Stoner, you're better off looking elsewhere.

it would probably depend on Montour's progression at the time of trade, that poster also included a 2nd round pick

The classic trade return for guys like JVR is a 1st+a good-but-not-elite prospect from a contender then whatever other pieces need to be included to make the deal work. I think Montour is currently playing his way out of the good-but-not-elite category, so I'd be inclined to look at more of the value being concentrated into 1 piece like this especially when it comes in a RD prospect
