so many people are hoping he is a failure, I am hoping he is a success that much more

The kid is going to have to exceed expectations. Mainly because, even the slightest hiccup and people will be so quick to pounce the kid.

I think the mental makeup is what I going to be the most crucial. If the kid can tune out everyone but the coaches and teammates, we should have a productive top six winger without question in Ho Sang.

Plenty of young players wear the number of their idol when they are YOUNG, but eventually grow out of it and carry a number more meaningful to their own identity. Some numbers are pretty iconic in certain sports.

JHS seems to be the guy that likes to be against the grain just for doing it. He likes that part and the attention that goes with it - we'll see how it shakes out for him on the ice. People deal with him bc he's talented, but the rest seems like exactly what it is.

He can do what he wants, but when you are the only jack_ _ _ that doesn't seem to go with the flow, your bring on all the extra crap one doesn't really need.

No offense, absent this kid being amazing, it will be great to see the Isles history of numbers to include a #66 and know when they see it's not Mario, but some clown 'showing respect to an idol.' Wonderful.

Somehow every young kid 'gets it' and finds another number, but not this one...

I never stopped wearing my idols number...been wearing 77 for 20+years. I think Mario is the best to ever play the game... better then Gretzky even. Who cares, it's just a number...I get its kind of sacred it until / if it's retired it is open to use. IMO 99% of people think gretz was better...let his number be the only one retired and let it go.

I just feel people around here are trying to constantly burry this kid. Now he's a dick for wearing 66 ? Lol

I actually did the reverse. Went from wearing my own number to wearing #29 as an adult because of Kenny Jonsson.

Nice. I haven't played for like 2 years but when ever I do play again, I may have to change my number to 51. Hands down my favorite player. 29 and 51 are imo two of the most complete players to ever wear orange and blue.

Yeah right. Virtually nobody's going to care about meaningless things like these. Lemieux is irrelevant in the context of Islanders franchise, his number even more so and if Hosang fails he'll just be one Kabanov-sized footnote in the Isles history, not much more.

If you don't think there will some good, bad, and ugly in his debut tonight then you need to take your blinders off.

As long as there's some good I'll be OK. However you cannot overlook the fact that Ho-Sang holds on to the puck way too much which can lead to turnovers. It's not like our season is over...We're competing for a playoff spot so a couple of bad turnovers can cost us a game and ultimately the playoffs.

the truth is we really got hurt injury-wise and to me that is the reason Ho-Sang is up. Not necessarily because it's the best fit. I hope he can blend in, but my take is he needs a lot of work across the board to become a regular NHLer.

Can he be any worse than Barzal was in his first game? I just don't think so, given he's had time to acclimate a little bit in the AHL.

The NHL has a big problem building on player personalities unlike the NBA, where individuals shine on the court and off and fans become attached to them and their brand. For example, look at PK Subban, a big name player with a big personality who gets pushed out of Montreal due to his personality and style.

It would be great for Ho-Sang to become a huge success and break the mold. He has a such a unique personality and I think with his skills and his fun and confident persona he can attract a following. I really hope he succeeds.

It's actually not a big deal. If this was one of the Canadian boys that are buddies with the higher ups in Canada this would be an article saying:

John Tavares Pays Tribute to Childhood Hero.

Really not a big deal.

the only people i can see that are getting butt hurt about the 66, are the Pens fans, and they can kiss my shiny metal ass!

as well, i don't see anyone wishing JHS to fail. some of us were pointing out that the needs to learn to play better with his mates, that's all.

if Weight told JHS to just focus on his defensive side, no goals against, i wouldn't blame him. maybe give him some time on the 2nd PP unit. keep it simple, keep the mistakes to a minimum, especially in our own end.

Can't wait to see Ho-Sang out there. Got to laugh at the folks getting all worked up about his number choice. Get over it. The kid's explanation was more than enough.

Kid has nothing to explain about why he wears the number-----I haven't seen Mario say anything, hopefully he comes out and just says its a non issue

I don't really care but it gives you insight into the player. Like I said, a zillion other players decide to move on from an iconic number as they moved up the ranks - JHS felt otherwise.

That's cool, but the reference was to professional players, not all the other types.

Did I miss the announcement that number 66 has been retired by the NHL?

I don't keep score of that petty nonsense.

If the guy wants to honor a Hall of Fame player more power to him.

Apparently it's petty enough that people are taking notice of it, yet somehow every other player since Mario retired chose other numbers.

There's no formal doctrine to not wear it, but there must be some reason 1,000s of NHL players didn't.

You're looking for something that just isn't there.

Let me know when the NHL retires number 9.

Clark Gillies? he was a beast and the best #9 of all time. With, an all-time beard.

NHL is pretty old-school, does't surprise me. Ho-Sang is a different animal with a unique personality, maybe closer to the Brett Hull, PK Subban, Jeremy Roenick outspoken types - he's the type of person that will probably push some boundaries. I went to high-school with his father, who was similar - though very smart & respectful.

I thought Puljujaarvi's #98 in EDM was a bit cheeky - though he was born in '98. Having a number between McDavid's and Gretzky's, in EDM, is probably not the smart thing to do but really, what the hell does it even matter.

I'm really pulling for this Ho-Sang kid. I think he's a unique person, but also a very unique player with special skills and the Islanders desperately need another big-game player. Ho-Sang, Barzal are two dynamic potential-stars - I want BOTH to come through bigtime!

He wasn't saying "I'd consider it" in a ******* way that escalated his importance. I can guarantee you he would change it. He meant he would consider it because that is the opposite of what he is currently doing, aka not considering it. Didn't mean like "Ehhh I'd consider it,."

I was being somewhat facetious. I think this whole thing is hilarious.

Also I hope you mean rhymes with "bass bowl." because IDK if I want to know what an ass in a hole would mean.

LOL. Realized afterwards "casserole" would work much better. Cause yes, an ass in a hole could be something terrifying... or, just simply a donkey in the Grand Canyon.

Anyway, great first game. Now Ho-Sang needs to change his number to Patrick Kane's for tomorrow.
