Player Discussion Josh Anderson - The WORKHORSE Edition

He was amazing during the December run and while I never gave up on the possibility of playoffs, the realist in me was lamenting how that version of him might never get back there anytime soon BUT HERE WE ARE BAYBAY

He's an animal.
This is the Randy that Jon Cooper said his team had no answer against after getting swept by CLB.

Craziest thing is up until this game, he was going up against the Caps entire team by himself up front.

Not sure why we wouldn't keep him as he's exactly the type of player you need to win in the playoffs.
Let's say he's been Perfect Josh Anderson for these three playoff games.

(We're 1-2, mind you.)

Does it undo or make up for the Josh Anderson we saw for dozens and doznes of games the past few regular seasons? In my book, a player who only shows up when he wants to is an unreliable player.

I'm taking a wide, impersonal view of the situation because on a game-by-game basis of course I loved his antics last match and I think it is the core of the sport: entertaining, athletic, competitive. I want to see more of it. I'm simply not convinced Anderson is the guy who'll deliver it regularly enough to make up for the times he doesn't deliver it.
Oh yeah it’s a bit of a gamble. But 2 straight years of playing at this level and being even mostly injury free, you have to take that chance. I’d gladly give him term if he trades us cap hit.

He’s too valuable. In a perfect world, a gm doesn’t have to take any risks but sometimes they have too. Who replaces what Andy brings?
He has more than 2 years of playing at far below this level and being injured and inconsistent. The chance that he reverts to being Pumpkin Spice Latte Josh Anderson instead of Bourbon Josh Anderson is high, in my estimation.

As for someone replacing what he brings -- again, it depends on what you consider to be Josh Anderson's output: his peak game or his average game. If it's the peak game, we have access to pretty much no one else who can do that. If it is the average game, I think many players can put up 20-25 points in a season and have the occasional hot game.

So far I've been a bit tough on Xhekaj and Anderson but I think it's not fair to say I'm a smurf-lover or size-hater. I want to see regular quality NHL play from Xhekaj and once that is achieved I think he'll be a fixture with the team... and with Anderson, well, I don't trust that he won't revert to bobo mode, as he has largely been for years now, at a moment's notice.

Valid concerns. It helps that Andy still has another year on his contract. If he gives you another year close to this one would you say no to him?

A lot of players have turned it around this year. Some in contract years, some not. I’d take varying degrees of minimal risk on all of them honestly. Short contracts for many of them.

I don’t think I’ve seen this many guys have turned around years. That’s why I don’t think it’s just luck. I think many of these guys are in their right chairs. MSL doesn’t make the greatest tactical judgements and what not but I think he’s been exemplary in getting the best out of his players.

He has *two* more years. Which makes me fear that if he has another brutal season like he did last year, that the subsequent following season (when we'll need all the cap space we can get and need to fine tune our team) would be impacted by his presence. It's the downside risk of him reverting to what he's been for the better part of the last four years.

But on the other hand, MSL might really be the powerhorse whisperer because a lot of players looked better than they did previously: Dvorak, Armia, Evans, Anderson, Gallagher...

Guys an animal. The last few seasons he obviously let the lack of production get to him. Now he’s using his speed and physicality to spearhead that veteran line. Imagine battling with Gallagher who never gives up while the Anderson looming? Extremely effective

Oh I thought both Gallagher and Andy just had the one after this year. I’m horrible with contract stuff.

Obviously weigh accordingly. Two more seasons would be perfect where we’d have a good gage of who could potentially replace who internally.

I think he can come potentially cap friendly where even if he underperforms or won’t cut to the quick. I think we’re in a very good spot cap wise so I wouldn’t stress out much about that. I think everyone’s on a pretty cap friendly deal and I assume that trend will continue.

I'm sorry but what were we saying about Anderson? Absolute beast. Love that he's on our team and a perfect vet for the youth.
Good for some to show a little integrity and admit being wrong about Anderson. Takes time but when you learn the game better, you'll get it and see why it was so wrong to say what was said.

Anderson and Gally have two more years.

Anderson will be 33 when his contract is up.

Gally will be 35.

Let's see where the next two years takes us with these guys...but by then, I am sure we will be letting them go sign a contract somewhere else. Both are f***ing warriors, and I hope we can get a cup in the next two years with them. Would be sweet.

Florian Xhekaj.

Then you have Davidson, Tuch and Thorpe.
None of them, except Tuch’s, has Anderson’s skating. And if Florian had Anderson’s skating or if Anderson had Florian’s hands and skills we would have an elite level forward.

One can always dream.

Quick, before he turns into a pumpkin for 2 years again, how much do you reckon we could get for him?

Maybe he can be the big part of the 2C package we're after?

Or maybe he's absolutely necessary to retain because there's no other way to get more size+speed up front
