Player Discussion Josh Anderson - The WORKHORSE Edition

I wonder if the reason he plays better in playoffs is because the league don’t call penalties on the hard in you face hitting game . Because in the regular season if a hits a quarter of a second late it’s a auto penalty ,but playoffs it’s ok a few seconds late

He was patchy on that Cup run. Only forward that showed up against TB though.
I still was a fan of his game on that run but there were games he didn’t quite show up but when he did he was a huge factor. I think people were unnecessarily harsh on him on that run and I wasn’t one of them
It’s is not humanly possible to continuous play that physical style every other day for 2months straight in the playoffs. Even Gretzky, Lemieux & McDavid are not ON every playoff game

Back then, he was also relied upon to be a goal scorer. I think he's one of those guys that feels the heat when pucks are not going in, and it affects the rest of his game.

Going lower in the lineup I think has shifted his mindset and in a way, probably feels like a certain weight has been lifted.

That’s fair but I think they were fairly dramatic fall offs. Again I was still a fan.

He’s been way more consistent of late and if we go on a run this season I wouldn’t be surprised if Andy was more consistently a factor this run than last.

Also, playoffs are all about favorable matchups, applies for teams & individual players - Caps are a favorable matchup for Anderson. Should Habs advance and play Canes, I don’t expect that team to be as favorable a matchup for an Anderson style player

Again that’s fair but honestly his speed and size is too much for just about any team.

TB had like dynasty level D in that Cup final and Anderson was the only forward who could get through that wall and he did do it consistently in that specific series. He was just in and out the three series prior. Not even criticizing that much just stating what happened.

He’s an absolute handful and this has been his most consistent season with us. Heck if he isn’t an absolute beast every game I won’t jump on him. I just really think he was more drastically Jekyll and Hyde that ‘21 run than he’s been at any point this season or playoffs until now

Yes. He’s in the right chair.

MB used to trade for nickels and dimes and put them in the top six. Then we’d get pissed when it didn’t work out. He’s a bottom sixer. Great there. And I think the same thing applies to Newhook.

Injuries has curtailed his career at times but when he is healthy Anderson is a beast

Fear of injury is one reason why i think he doesn't go full wrecking ball all the time in the regular season. That style is awesome and fun to watch but it doesn't come without risks. That brand of hyper physical gameplay can be hard on the body.

The playoffs though are the endgame and he just lay everything on the line because if you lose a series there are no tomorrow. We often talk about some players having another gear in the playoffs and Anderson is a prototypical exemple of this. He's a warrior and a badass

Legendary type game from him last night, I take back anything bad I ever said
One exciting game doesn’t undo several years of bad play but I hope a desperate GM feels like they want a piece of the Anderson legend come this summer.

Would be a mistake for us to part with him

Yeah if he plays like this next year you have to keep him. I could maybe even live with a bit of a lesser season tbh.
I’m not convinced yet the bigger mistake is trusting that he won’t revert to how he played for the large part of his contract.

I love the idea of Anderson and would want a big team but big players tend to be inconsistent, injury prone (unavailable), and overrated in their impact. It’s a tough one to make heads or tails with, Josh Anderson.

Oh yeah it’s a bit of a gamble. But 2 straight years of playing at this level and being even mostly injury free, you have to take that chance. I’d gladly give him term if he trades us cap hit.

He’s too valuable. In a perfect world, a gm doesn’t have to take any risks but sometimes they have too. Who replaces what Andy brings?

Not sure why we wouldn't keep him as he's exactly the type of player you need to win in the playoffs.
Under contract for another 2; you keep him for sure the way he turned it around. You assess at trade deadline 2027 at 32yo. If someone wants him as part of a 2c or 1rd deal maybe?

Loooove his game right now.
