Jordan Staal vs Eric Staal

To be fair to OP, he did say "right now"- in which case E. Staal is still better.

J. Staal was putting up 40-50 points before last season. E. Staal just put up 52 points in a down year. If E. Staal continues to decline and J. Staal stays healthy and productive maybe we can talk about this next year, but for now.. no. E. Staal could still pop off for 70 points, J. Staal can't. His better D doesn't make up for that.

Is it finally time to admit that Jordan Staal is the better Staal?

Erik Staal hasn't aged well. He went from an elite 1C to a barely 2C within just 1 year, while Jordan Staal still is a solid 2C.

Erik Staal doesnt miss 6 months every other year and is the most skilled Staal on the best contract.

Jordan is generally where offense goes to die. He’s had two or three brief moments in his canes career where he got into beast mode but that’s it. Some canes fans think because he had one to finish last season that he’s finally broken out. In his 30’s.

Maybe he will have a uptick this year but that’s more likely because his linemates are gonna put up a lot of pts and he’s going to benefit. I doubt it’ll be because he shoots any better, takes the puck to the net any better, or has better vision. He won’t have to go anywhere near beast mode to get pts, so if he doesn’t put up at least 49 it could be the most disappointing yet.

Eric is a number one center wrapping up his career. Jordan at his very best was a decent number two who put up 49 pts. I’ve found him to be on the average an offensive disappointment at that spot. He’s great at possession along the boards, and he rarely turns the puck over. He uses his size well and waits for a point to open up to pass to. He’s amazing at faceoffs. He covers his man in the slot very well and never leaves the zone early. He’s very responsible. The disappointment has always been about offense, and it’s where the two clearly separate.

If you’re talking the leadership department, the disparity is just as big. Eric had his flaws but overall did a good job. Jordan has gotten better, and he’s great in the locker room from what it’s said but being captain wasn’t his thing. Maybe it was too much respect for filling his brothers shoes, but he didn’t even want it. When he finally did do it as co captains with Faulk the leadership was off. Though Faulk is equally responsible there.

On a related note, I was watching a Canes game against the Sabres last year and was kinda laughing at how offensively inept J. Staal looked. Then he scored a beauty of a backhand spin-o-rama and I shut up. Pretty sure that was in the midst of one of those beast modes you speak of- overall he looked bad, I was confident in him not being very offensively talented, but he had one shift where he just schooled the Buffalo D.

Jordan and Eric are weird animals, because Eric's 2nd season was his most productive by far, and Jordan's rookie season and his young days in Pit suggested a star being held back by playing 3C behind Crosby and Malkin (WHAT a Center depth that was)

Today though, Eric is still 4 years older, and still better. Idk if Jordan will ever be better in a single year tbh

I defended Staal for years, but the haters were right all along. His consistently inconsistent starts were the result of lackadaisical off season training regimens. Dude was still a top 15 center in the game. Makes you wonder what could have been if he had the killer instinct of an Aho or Bryant.

Between the two of them, Eric has the 13 highest scoring seasons.

Is this a serious thread? Or are we just talking about this coming season?

Eric AINEC, the lack of hands of Jordan Staal has cost the Canes many a scoring opportunity in the past few seasons.

You honestly believe that career-high 50 point center, Jordan Staal, is a 1st line center in the league? Or am I missing the sarcasm?
one of the best defensive and play driving centers in the league.

So based on advanced stats, you'd take Jordan Staal, the Carolina Hurricanes 2nd/3rd line center, over some of these players? Staal is a good defensive center, but to have him labeled as a top 31 center in the league (aka first line center) is just wrong. Being able to put up points as well as play defensively would make him a first line center. 65 points is around the minimum for a first line center. Unfortunately, he isn't able to get above 50 points.

1. Connor McDavid
2. Nathan Mackinnon
3. Leon Draisaitl
4. Sidney Crosby
5. Aleksander Barkov
6. Auston Matthews
7. John Tavares
8. Steven Stamkos
9. Brayden Point
10. Mark Scheifele
11. Claude Giroux
12. Evgeni Malkin
13. Sebastian Aho
14. Jack Eichel
15. Jonathan Toews
16. Tyler Seguin
17. Patrice Bergeron
18. Ryan O'Reilly
19. Dylan Larkin
20. Evgeni Kuznetsov
21. Logan Couture
22. Max Domi
23. Nicklas Backstrom
24. Tomas Hertl
25. Anze Kopitar
26. Sean Monahan
27. Elias Pettersson
28. Mat Barzal
29. Sean Couturier
30. Ryan Johansen
31. David Krejci

ill bold the guys hes better than and underline the guys where its debatable

Having experienced both and been frustrated by both, I'd rather have Jordan.

Eric is frustrating because he's never really had the work ethic and mental toughness to maximize his talent. Jordan is frustrating because he's never had the talent to match his work ethic and mental toughness. But always with Jordan you know you're getting absolutely everything he's got.

You could make one hell of a player if you could smash the two of them together into one.
