To play devils advocate....perhaps the team thinks his performance this season was an outlier, because it's a contract year? That's the only way any of this would make sense.

Spence was fantastic for us, especially near the end of the season. But maybe the team think he can't do it over a longer term.

I would love to get him signed for a 2 year contract for $3.5-4.5. That's enough time to get Yak acclimatized, and 2 years is little risk for the Sens. (But I doubt that will get it done with the hype happening now.)

if the sens have concerns then just take him to arb and put him on a prove it again deal.

there really is little reason to trade Spence unless a team is sending a better defensemen back which seems highly likely

getting a top 6 winger should not be that costly so I wouldn't trade Spence to fill that hole

Who are these folk you're referring to?

I like Spence as a player, but if they move him then it's not an issue of whether or not he's good. It's about fit. They obviously feel that they need a rangy strong skater defender with size and physicality to play in the top 4 and PK, and that's probably more important than having a small puck mover who ideally plays on the third pairing when we already have elite puck movers in Sanderson and Chabot.
Which defensemen are you talking about? List a player

I think he and Zetterlund are the most likely players to move on from this team. For different reasons but I think it’ll just come down to the fact that Staios and Green (much like other teams) will prefer to have a defensemen who has more size and bite.

Spence is a good player. His value should be good on the market. I think you look at him and he’s a player you want on your 3rd pair, at least I think that’s what Staios and Green would want. They brought him in as an insurance policy but not as a piece to build on IMO. He’s done his job but I have no doubt they are looking for an upgrade. A team will value him more than we do and we will use that value to get the type of player we want to complete our defensive group.

Then you consider the amount of money he should be able to get and that’s where it starts to make less sense for us. We already will need to re-up Kleven next year and he will get a nice pay raise. For Spence At 3-4M a year you’d probably like to pay a bit more and get a player that plays the style that you want back there and a player that’s a solidified top 4 Dman. You can’t allocate 8-9M to your 3rd pair. You have Matinpalo at league minimum who can play there and you have Yakemchuk coming up and let’s be honest he’s much better offensively than Spence and I think again that’s another part of the writing’s on the wall for Spence.

He could be back if they can’t find “that” player who will complete our D group but I think it’s unlikely. I would bet money he’s not on the roster to start the year. With so many teams looking for RD around the league there will be a team looking at him to possibly play top 4 minutes for them.
