Player Discussion Joonas Korpisalo

Well you got one thing right. I would definitely be surprised.

If I'm a GM who needs a backup goaltender, why am I dealing assets for a guy who is under contract for three years, $9M and a .893 save% when...
I can easily get someone for less money, less commitment, and better stats for FREE?
Like who? Thanks to guys like Sway the goalie market is forever changed. Cheap goaltending days are over in the grand scheme of things.

My humble opinion anyway

He can scream and shout all he wants, if I’m Don I’m not attaching assets to trade you.

It’s either buyout or enjoy your time in Rhode Island buddy. Or I guess New Hampshire now..

It sucks Korpi is doing this because I would rather have Korpi at 3m than a lot of those guys for 2m.

I wonder if just playing Korpi more is an option? Maybe not straight platoon but a 60%-40% type thing.

Korpi knows that this team needs the least amount of distractions as possible going into next year though. He wants to be a starter. I don’t blame him.

The quote is completely without context, so before rushing to any judgements about what he means or is doing, it would be good to see the entire conversation around it including tone and facial expressions.

Whether he said it or not, do you want a player that does not care if he plays or not. I am sure if he said it or not some frustration might be part of it when the guy he was backing up was not up to the task, and then reads mention of his contract when the guy he is backing up is making about 5 mil more.
Oh I agree 100 percent.

Korpi should be pissed. The team, despite a rough season, had some of its best stretches when there was a more frequent rotation going (and mind you, both goalies played well during it. Especially Korpi). Then they went away from it and Korpi was tasked with jumping in every once in a while, which is difficult for any goaltender but especially one whose used to getting more starts.

I don't know who wrote the little comment at the bottom of the article, but calling any of these guys "reliable" and "rather good" is a stretch for most. Andersen is injury-prone, Allen has always been very so-so, Georgiev got dumped by the Avs because he's terrible, Samsonov is wildly unreliable, Vladar I have a natural liking of for obvious reasons but reality is he's no more than ok, and so on. Forsberg and Vanecek I'd at least consider, but I don't think either would be better than Korpi, and not much cheaper. Husso is the best of them but he will also cost the most.

Provided he's happy I think I'd most likely keep Korpi unless a really good alternative came along. But if he's unhappy then you've got to look at your options. I think a trade could be made. Maybe no team would be willing to take on the full $3m but if the Bruins had to retain a small amount or throw in a little sweetener to get it done I could probably live with it depending on the return and the fine details. Not going to be the easiest deal to make but I do think Joonas is tradeable if it proves necessary.

I have no problems with him staying on. He's a solid NHL goaltender. $3m is perhaps a little steep for a backup, but who are they getting that is definitely better that is going to come in too much below that? Your two AHL contenders in DiPietro and Bussi are unproven in the NHL so it's sign a UFA or trade for a backup at what cost?
Andersen or Allen. They've both played 100's of games, both have career save percents over .907, had good years this year, and they both can be starters if the shit hits the fan again (but are best served in 1b roles given their age and health).

Not sure what Joonas was expecting. He started 24 games to Swayman's 58 which is what I would expect out of a back-up goaltender, somewhere in that 55:27 ratio (1 out of every 3 games).

If he's not happy with that I'm not sure where else he'd be getting more starts, but if he's truly unhappy hopefully Sweeney can find a place for him this summer.

I'm not attaching anything to Korpisalo to move him. If he doesn't like it and wants to leave, then I'm happy to entertain the idea of a mutual agreement to terminate his contract. He wasn't exactly great and considering he faced mostly non-playoff teams, I don't see teams lining him up to pay him what he's getting now.

This coming from someone who was in the minority of fans that was ok with acquiring him in the Ullmark deal.

He just wants more playing time one way or the other, can't blame him. Should have played more this year TBH specially on the road where Swayman extra sucked.

Old Joonas might have himself a "beggers choosers" situation when it comes to finding a team willing to give him more playing time than he got last year.
