You agreed with me but then wrote a big post that was basically like 'why didn't do the opposite of what you said, though'. They looked at their depth chart and saw no room for him. They didn't want him as a 7th D. I can't find if he was injured at all last season because he missed 20 games, but looking at his game log it doesn't appear so, it looks like they were just healthy scratching him, especially late in the season; it looks like he was only in there about half the time. Chances are at the exit interview each side expressed some dissatisfaction with the other and they made the decision to get rid of him. That's how it should go in this league.
Fair - no point in stringing him along a second year if that was the case

From Jersey w/ Love
Matheson just had 34 points in 48 games and 62 points in 82 games and makes 4.875 million for 2 seasons. I think at 2.44 mil for 2 years, there would have been several takers. He is not a # 1 dmen, but more than capable on the 2nd pairing.

Kovacevic is New Jersey # 4 dmen and yes he does a little bit of everything.

I really don't like your avatar. I think you should change it.

This thread bump keeps making me think we either traded him again or signed him to an extension.

Glad Johnny is doing well. Montreal is taking heat, and they should but trust me if you want to see a the debate about Kovacevic then the Jets board is probably lamenting letting him go more than Montreal is. Chevy is a very solid GM and doesn’t have many if any unforced errors on his resume in Winnipeg when it comes to putting guys on waivers that come back to bite him in the ass. As far as I can remember this is the first home grown prospect that was waived that went on to succeed.

In the summer of 2021 we lacked proper veteran depth on our D core so Chevy went out and acquired Brendan Dillon and Nate Schmidt who were much needed at the time. Unfortunately that created a backlog for young guys moving up and getting a shot and I think Kovacevic (and Chisholm to a lesser degree) were the odd men out. Funny that Kovacevic ended up becoming what our Org dreamed Stanley would become. Since he was a 1st round pick I think the Org was more committed to him as a prospect. Stanley now appears to be forever locked into a #7 or #8 novelty act role but have no fear our org has not given up trying to fit that square peg into a round hole (focus ps this isn’t a therapy session).

Very glad Jon has landed on his feet and is playing productive top 4 minutes. He was a good guy and always popular on our AHL team.

Interestingly the acquisition of Pesce and the ascension of Kovacevic has done the same in NJ. With Nemec being the odd man out at the moment. Kova has been so good the consensus is he needs to be resigned and the possibility of moving Nemec is being weighed against the cost of moving Hamilton.

Edit: Just went and looked at his stats with Winnipeg/Manitoba, didn't realize he was a tick below .5 ppg in his final 2 AHL seasons. We've used him very heavily defensively but he does flash offensive skills. Those AHL numbers back that up. Pretty decent point totals from his time with Merrimack as well.
