The biggest thing with Spurgeon/Brodin comparison is before the season we were looking to compare Brodin to Spurgeon, they both rely on the cerebral game and skating to be effective, now we are trying to compare Spurgie to Brodin and honestly Spurgie can't hold a candle to Brodin so it seems like he took a step back.

he's been fine, bit shaky at times, jumps in and shoots the puck.

I know he probably won't win the Calder, but man if he does the amount of gloating I'm going to do to a particular poster will be a ban-able offense.

This, plus some other guys I know off these boards.

I was surprised by Russo putting Spurgeon as the 3rd best defenseman. I know he loves Spurgeon, but he has not played as well this season as in the past. Granted there's a dropoff after Suter/Brodin, but Gilbert was the best defenseman early in the season and has been serviceable to good since. Outside of his shooting on the PP, Spurgeon has been a step slow and mediocre in his end.

IMO, Spurgeon is turning into strictly a PP specialist...I was never really all that impressed with his play in the defensive zone, other than him connecting on those quick outlet passes....

He's also gotten burned a few times pinching in the offensive zone, Backstrom bailed him out this time...but it cost a goal earlier in the season (can't recall the opponent).

As of late, Spurgeon has been their 3rd best defenseman. Stoner/Falk/Prosser have all looked very poor as of late and whatever injury/sickness that hit Gilbert has taken a bit of a toll. He's not as crisp, slightly late, and isn't playing the minutes he was. We'll see how he closes but as of right now, I wouldn't exactly disagree with Russo.

Of course though, Suter and Brodin are so far advanced than the rest of the pack.

yeah i wanted to knee-jerk react to Russo's ranking of Spurge over Gilbert but if it's just for the last week or so I have to agree. However, i have no problem predicting Gilbert will pick it up and I just like his game better over-all. Like Muck said (and I said last game, I think) Spurge is essentially a PP specialist now. It's fine, because we really need someone shooting the puck and he's getting open. He's bad in the defensive zone to the point where I think Stoner outplays him there on a nightly basis.

That was Heatley making a soft pass to the point with the wing on the other team attacking off the face-off in which Spurgeon was flat footed. That puck should have never been passed to Spurgeon and cycled down low. Spurgeon is our 3rd best dman playing lots of minutes lately and capitalizing on his chances on the PP. He is also one of the biggest bargains in the NHL in terms of salary to ice time and points for defensemen.

Spurgeon is exactly what he is projected to be..if not for our ridiculous lack of depth on the blue line when we got him..a #4-#5 guy who can play serviceable minutes and is solid on the PP..if he's your number 4 guy your group is a pretty solid one. To say he is #3 and Gibby is #4 is a bit questionable but Gilbert hasn't been good lately either. They both aren't great defensively but offensively Spurg has outproduced Gibby.

Hey! Tampa fan coming in peace to ask one question that popped into my mind yesterday.

If you had to choose between Brodin and Suter, which one would you choose? Both, this season and looking into the future.

I just thought it was an interesting question, since both Brodin and Suter have played amazingly well this season. Brodin should definitely be in the TOP3 when talking about Calder nominees.

PS. I secretly cheer for Minnesota when Tampa's not playing :yo:

We finally get our first ever #1 D in franchise history, and luckily somehow get another guy who looks like he could be just as good, and you make us choose?!

Something just clicked while I was thinking about that question. Just another level of epicness to Brodin per say.

First and foremost, between Suter and Brodin which one would I rather keep? Brodin. Tough decision to make but.... Brodin. He made Scandella look like an AHL allstar in the beginning of the AHL season where Scandella was something around 0g 11a through 10games i believe. At which point Brodin was injured, out for 3 months and played 1 AHL before joining the Wild. What has Scandella been up to since? Stinking it up at about 4 pts in his last 20+.

Then look at Suter. Not saying that Suter is nothing without Brodin. But Suter wasn't playing this confident and this good when he wasn't with Brodin.

The Brodin Effect.
