Jokerit back to Liiga + finnish KHL players

The sons were born just then and he didn't want to play in the AHL while the Oilers had an LHD logjam, otherwise could have been a decent bottom-pairing no-nonsense defenseman.

Jonas Engström to Jokerit, not necessarily the most skilled player even for the lowly standards of Mestis but a reliable workhorse and an interesting signing in that he has taken part in a lot of promotion playoff games, including successfully taking Oskarshamn to the SHL as team captain. A good find.

e: Turns out they thought he's a top-line, PP1 guy and less than surprisingly it didn't work out. Quite underwhelming.

During Jokerit's KHL stitnt, their last year or 2nd last year in the league I wrote that if they ever drop out of KHL, it would take severa years when they get their things together. Well, it happened exactly like predicted.

Now, in North America, they would have instantly joined the highest league level simply with a new team and org because it brings money and publicity. Same way Maple Leafs bring publicity to Nhl just in smaller scale. So basically it's nice to have sport romantics type of thinking tand team crawling up from lower leagues but the opposite side is the reality that finnish sm-liiga needs publicity, money and a big teams desperately. If i recall correctly there hasnt been salary increases maybe in decases of teams' player budgets and so on. So it's becoming a semi-professional league.

And Liiga attendance figures are disasterous.

Swedes don't want it.

Also, Liiga attendances are not disasterous.
I bet in the long run, Swedes would love a Nordic league. I would also bet the Finnish teams' attendance would be a lot better if there was a Nordic league.

I wouldn't be as interested in a Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Barrie Colts game as a Leafs vs. Bruins game. Not for a second do I believe that a Pelicans vs. Ilves game would do half as well as a Frolunda vs. lves game.

Europe needs more big game vibes. Once the war is over in Ukraine (or Putin is gone), the KHL will retake all the good players again.

Some attendance data from the 2024-25 regular season

1.DEL - 7740 fans per game
5.CZ - 5820
6.Liiga - 4599

Occupancy of arenas with 90+% including sold-outs

1.NL - 62% of games with attendance 90+% of arena´s capacity
2.SHL - 62%
3.DEL - 59%
4.KHL - 48%
5.CZ - 33%
6.Liiga - 15%

It is obvious Liiga is doing very badly, disasterously.

Different tradition in North America than in Europe. Finnish and Swedish leagues' games do better than Finnish and Swedish teams' CHL games.

Reactions: just a hockey fan
I see certain people still have the unfortunate mental illness that makes them talk shit and hate a country for no reason. The hockey community has a real hatred and problem with everything about Finland, has been happening for years unfortunately. Sad individuals but I guess people need happiness from something and this is their way to feel good.
