People get pissed off when I say I proudly bike on sidewalks, but I don't care

Unless you bike as slow as a pedestrian, this is more dangerous than biking on the road. The viewing angles at intersections are worse and cars at intersections are not expecting someone traveling faster than a pedestrian from the sidewalk.

Yeah I think Amsterdam is the absolute best example of what a bike friendly society could look like. I think every urbanized area should be striving to be as close to Amsterdam in terms of bikability and public transit, it's just flat out not good in most parts of the United States.

I'm moving to the DC area in the next few months and it actually seems like DC is one of the best cities in the United States when it comes to bike trails and public transit. It was a big reason why I was looking there.
I took for granted that Dutch cities were always like this but actually they under took a massive project in the 60's/70's after they started mimicking North America to reverse course and reclaim cities for pedestrians/cyclists.

As I mentioned, you can't entirely replicate the results here in North America but you can at least try a little.

The pic below is from the city I live in. Really incredible what happens when you at least try to make cities more human friendly.

I look both ways and dismount when it's busy.

also most of my biking is done between 7 and 8 am and on bike paths. Im on the road maybe 5-10 percent of my rides. Since its almost a straight shot down from my house to the river pathways on a road with no intersections

No it's not, and you insisting it is in your relentless crusade doesn't actually do cyclists any favors.

Yes it is. Your relentless crusade and entitlement that roads are exclusively for cars is what doesn't do cyclists any favors.

That is just complete bullshit. Your roads are definitely up to par for cyclists. What isn't up to par is your driving habits, drivers education and overall attitude. This is coming from a northern european who has spent months in north america and closely observed the driving culture around europe, asia and north america.
I literally felt my life at hazard driving in Italy and have never seen such disregard for other drivers' health as I did in that situation. And the private corporations who "maintain" the highways will literally put up fake construction zones, with wildly fluctuating speed changes, just to get out of liability. Bad driving and unsafe road maintenance is a worldwide issue.

NYPOST reporting Higgins had a hearing today and proceeded to let out a sigh when the judge told him he would be held until Thursday.

Judge Michael J. Silvanio ordered Higgins to be held until his detention hearing next Thursday, September 5.

“So…I’m here until Thursday?” Higgins asked the judge at one point during the proceedings.

When the judge explained that the usual 72-hour holding period was extended due to the holiday weekend, Higgins sat back in his chair and let out a heavy sigh.

No it’s not. Biking on a sidewalk is much safer for both the cyclist and the pedestrians.

Drivers actively look for pedestrians and see the cyclist on a sidewalk. Cyclists should be on the sidewalk more than they should be on a road with motor vehicles

Most european drivers suck too though. Especially france and italy. But north europe is probably better.
Can't say about Italians since I've never been there but what I can say is that if you ignore all the honking, then the french and germans are really considerate drivers.
Having recently spent two weeks in Scotland and Ireland (one week in each) and driven every single day in a rental car totalling over 1000mi, I'm not sure I can fully condone this statement. What I experience in the highlands of Scotland is unlike anything I've experienced in the US - urban or rural.

UK has what, 65million people? US has 330million. Nearly 5x as big so I tried to keep in mind that under a standard bell curve, for every absolute shit driver in Scot/Ire I saw, there's at least five of them in the US somewhere. The natural population disparity combined with population density of the east coast makes it a very difficult apples-to-apples comparison
Dude.
Take in to consideration that you drove the entire trip "on the wrong side of the road". Now I'm not saying that you're a bad driver but maybe there were some things that you missed and maaayyyybe you made a mistake which you interpreted as shitty driving by scots or irish drivers. Just saying. I know I've done that.

Reminded me of just yesterday. Side street, came to a full stop at a stop sign. Nothing coming, both ways, start in to a right turn. Teenage boy on a scooter on the sidewalk on the street I'm turning on to came just a flying down the sidewalk. No way I could have seen him, giant hedge on the corner blocking the view of that stretch of sidewalk from the stop sign. We both braked in time, but like 1 second and ten feet more from either of us and I don't know the outcome.

RIP, too sad to even think about much

There's a pack of kids in my subdivision who ride around on electric bikes going 35 mph on the sidewalks and it's so dangerous for this reason. Sight lines are especially bad in peak summer with the vegetation at its maximum. The police are holding a public meeting about it next week and I hope people wake up before we have our own tragedy.

Once again you are grossly and irresponsibly misrepresenting what people are saying to you.

I have never once stated that roads should be exclusive to cars. I have stated that I want roads and sidewalks to be safe for everyone to use, which means first acknowledging that most roads in this country are not designed or built with biker safety in mind.

You insisting that these roads are perfectly fine as is and it's all just bad drivers is potentially harmful to the efforts to design and build roads that are safer for bikers.

Drunk drivers should be jailed even without an incident. It really identified the true assholes in the world.
Correct, because even if a drunk driver doesn’t end up killing anyone, they’ve still demonstrated a clear willingness to kill just by virtue of drinking and driving. That’s obviously some f***ed up anti-social behaviour that needs to be made an example of.

Absolutely not. Cyclists are closer in speed to cars than they are to pedestrians. Viewing angles for sidewalks at intersections are not designed for cyclist speeds. That's why cycling on sidewalks is illegal in most jurisdictions.
