Hilarious that once the reports come out about why he did it, that people shut up.

His nickname was apparently associated to derogatory and offensive items so he (the agent) decided to trademark it to protect Gaudreau.

How are people still blasting him for it?

Actually he hasn't done either of those things yet. He simply trademarked it. You think Mr. Hockey is arrogant? The Great One? Great Eight? The Dominator? Those are all registered trademarks. So every athlete that trademarks a nickname to make some extra cash is an arrogant ******* in your mind? You must live in a sad world.

Yes, cause "Johhny Hockey" accomplished as much as the Great One. Are you kidding me?
You must live in a fantasy world then, nice little personal dig lol

Yes, sure, it has absolutely nothing with making money off it, just protecting his brand. I have a bridge to sell you.

What if your actual name is Johnny Hockey?

Well then you would be in violation of the trademark and thus you would have to change your name. ;):sarcasm:

I play guitar, and there is a dude that owns a boutique guitar amp company. The name of the business is his last name LLC, and his amps have his last name on the face plate. He recently had to stop manufacturing amps with his name on them due to a trademark from an old Fender amp of the same name.

How does that mean I live in a fantasy world? Did I say Gaudreau has accomplished as much as Gretzky?

So what I'm learning from you is that it's no longer considered arrogant or vain once you've reached a certain level of fame, correct? Gretzky is humble for trademarking it after he already made millions but Gaudreau's arrogant for doing it on his entry level contract... okkk....

Edit: Even though, if Gretzky's agent was smart, he would have trademarked "The Great One" as soon as possible as well. Wouldn't be surprised if he was around the same age as Gaudreau.

Did I just read ITT that winning the Heisman is more important than anything a hockey player could do short of breaking Gretzkys records?

Dur football is more popular than hockey, therefore I hate JG.

Anything to crap on John Gaudreau, I guess.

I'm Johnny Hockey on Twitter, I don't have to change that now do I?

Might pay you off handsomely for the namesake!

.com's were bought with the sole purpose of selling it off. Twitter/social media is the same thing these days, so wouldn't be surprised.

First I want to buy the narrative you're trying to sell.

I think your already bought the narrative his agent is trying to sell, what are you going to do with two narratives?

Edit: I'll tell you what, if he does not try to commersialize this in any way, I'll come back here and eat crow. However, if he starts selling "Johhny Hockey" shirts, you will come back here and admit that it was done for the money. Deal?

Well, you are comparing this ****** to Gretzky, you tell me wtf you were trying to say?

And yes, once you have actually proven something, then go for it. A rookie doing this is arrogant to me.

It's just an opinion, why so upset?

How about say "Some fans call me that, and it's all in good fun. While, I appreciate their support I don't consider myself Johnny Hockey -- I'm just a guy playing a game I love and enjoying it."

As to his reputation being tarnished???? I thought it was fans who called him that? How exactly would someone use the moniker in a way that would tarnish his name? Particularly if he made the statement above. He certainly doesn't have to quit hockey.

I'm sure Richard Nixon hated the moniker "Tricky Dick" -- and I mean truly hated it. That said, I would sincerely doubt he ever thought about trademarking it to avoid someone misusing it or to otherwise "control" the name.

Ok great, so you've made a statement through the media saying what you said. "Some fans call me that, and it's all in good fun. While, I appreciate their support I don't consider myself Johnny Hockey -- I'm just a guy playing a game I love and enjoying it." Maybe suddenly the millions of hockey fans and media personalities all in unison stop calling you that. But probably not. Realistically, not. If anything, you've drawn attention to yourself. Now some companies starts making cheap products via child labour, or sex toys, all with ''Johnny Hockey'' all over them and suddenly you are associated with it all because you didn't trademark the name earlier because you didn't want to upset some internet fans. People Google the name Johnny Hockey and suddenly a bunch of cheap products come up first on the search results. Things that have nothing to do with you at all. Yet because you didn't want to upset some internet fans on a message board and didn't take a couple hours to think it through and trademark your name, suddenly you are associated with that product.

Does that sound silly and unrealistic? Sure it does. But it has the potential to happen. Money makes this world go round and you can bet some savvy business man will one day figure out a way to profit off it. And it has happened in the past. People have learned their lessons, and that's why trademarks exist in the first place. Better to snip at it now and risk the wrath of a couple faceless internet posters for a thread or 2, then to not do anything about it and be subject to scenarios like this 10 years down the road.
