What is the realism that is missing from John Wick that is so distracting?

It isn't supposed to be a completely realistic movie. Again I bring up the "mythology" aspect to the films and the stylization that makes the films unique to most other action films.

It kind of reminds me of what happened with the Matrix. (apologies if this has been mentioned already)

You had an initial offering that had a tight story with a laser focus on the objective and didn't dwell on more than hints or clues about the greater environment.

As they try to broaden the scope of that universe, it messes with the sublime simplicity of the first films in each series. The sequels seem sort of bloated and plodding.

I think I can take a little bit of mythology but a lot gets hokey. Wanted managed to go from cool to hokey in the span of a single film. That is kind of dubiously impressive.

There's a big difference between Hong Kong action flicks and Hollywood action flicks of the 80s and 90s. Being about a one-man army doesn't make all such movies alike. John McClane in Die Hard kills only a dozen men in the movie and makes each kill look hard and take a lot of energy and bullets. John Wick kills probably close to three dozen men in each movie, often with quick kills and taking on more than one at once. They're very different, and while neither is realistic, one is more realistic than the other.
Three dozen kills? You must have only watched the first 10 minutes.
I actually enjoyed the first two movies. They’re mindless entertainment but fun. You’re right though the killing is way over the top.

I believe the official count from the 3 is 304 or something close.

I’ll gladly take Wick’s brand of action (fast-paced gunplay and creative melee kills) over Marvel’s (CGI punching). Both are unrealistic of course, but the John Wick movies feel a hell of a lot more passionately made, rather than designed with an algorithm by a soulless studio to steal your money.
The Winter Soldier will forever be my favourite MCU movie because it was about weaponry and melee fights instead of flying people with laser beams and other super powers. Captain America and the Winter Soldier were enhanced humans but humans nonetheless. It is the closest they ever got to not being a pure CGI fest.

I enjoyed the sequel because it still did keep a pretty tight leash on all the Mythology. The third sprawls way more than the first two, which is why things become a lot more convoluted.

Plus the preparation scene in two was a great piece of worldbuilding and insight as to the kind of job John Wick had before he left it all.

In that scene I love how they are talking about guns without really ever using the word...using wine tasting and culinary terms instead lol

Yeah, I was being really conservative because I didn't want to be accused of exaggerating to make my point. Also, it's been 5 years since I saw the first one and I wasn't sure if my more recent memory of the 3rd one was clouding my memory.

That's a big reason why Captain America: The First Avenger is one of the few Marvel movies that I've seen that I've sort of liked. It was relatively grounded for a superhero movie, more like the Superman and Batman movies that I liked growing up.

I for one don't mind how the first movie went from and action flick with a story that opened a world to straight 'Shoot Em Up' sequels.

It fills the over the top niche in that genre amongst all the crap that I watch and enjoy to escape reality.

John Wick 5 has officially been confirmed

Nice but I guess we might see more announcements like this with the way the industry has been shutdown and works backed-up. Studios will likely want to save when they can and if they already thought about doing multiples of a movie franchise, they can often save shooting them at the same time.

More casting for The Continental

https://variety.com/2021/tv/news/john-wick-starz-prequel-series-the-continental-cast-1235092791/

The “John Wick” prequel series at Starz, “The Continental,” is rounding out its main cast with five new additions.
Mishel Prada (“Vida”) will play KD; Hubert Point Du-Jour (“Blindspot,” “Madame Secretary”) will play Miles; Jessica Allain (“The Laundromat,” “Thriller”) has been cast as Lou; Nhung Kate (“Swapping Fate,” “The Better Man”) has been cast as Yen; and Ben Robson (“Animal Kingdom,” “Vikings”) has been cast as Frankie.
The five join previously announced series lead Colin Woodell as well as cast member Mel Gibson.
“The Continental” will explore the origin behind the titular hotel-for-assassins through the eyes and actions of Winston Scott (Woodell), who is dragged into the Hell-scape of a 1975 New York City to face a past he thought he’d left behind. Winston charts a deadly course through the New York’s mysterious underworld in a harrowing attempt to seize the iconic hotel, which serves as the meeting point for the world’s most dangerous criminals. In the films, Scott is played by Ian McShane.

I know I'm replying to an old post here and this is all in hindsight. I saw John Wick 4 last week, and it was my first John Wick movie. I know this is what movies do and it's not expected to be 'realistic', but apart from big action scenes I just find something extra silly about there being this big super secret super powerful ancient assassins society, and they can just blow up a building in New York or have a massive shoot out in the streets of Paris... and everyone just seems fine with it. Nothing suspicious here, everyone move along!

Still a great action flick. But considering the first movie was basically about some gang bangers killing the wrong guys dog, without seeing the whole series I have to wonder if it really benefited from having this extended "mythology".

The "mythology" existed from the very first movie. They lean heavily on that throughout the franchise.

The universe continues to expand. with a John Wick 5, Ballerina, The Continental and a AAA video game series in development.

The assassin-heavy world of the movies will continued to be built out, he added, and the fifth movie “will be organically grown out of how we’re starting to tell those stories.”

The thing with 5 is that how do you call it John Wick if he is dead? The seem to want to move forward with it, with or without Reeves.

Likewise, it’s been made clear that the goal is to keep the franchise going with or without Reeves. So the next mainline movie has some interesting directions as far as where it can go and who some of the major players in it can end up being.

I wish that you had spoiler tagged that. The movie's been available digitally for less than a week.

Ah a video game. I was thinking about that a year or so ago. Wick would be the perfect character to play in a video game and the franchise has reached a level of popularity where it has become essentially a blockbuster at this point - there would be a lot of interest.

How often do you see each successive movie in a series make more money than the previous one over 4 movies? I don't think it has happened. Closest might be Captain America, but that stopped at 3 movies. The fourth movie will be released next year, but I'm sure it won't accumulate as much revenue as Civil War.

There was a lot of intrigue surrounding the impossible mission Wick had to perform to "get out" of his profession to be with his wife which was discussed in the first 2 movies. It would make sense if that would be the final major plot point of the video game.

Ever saw Rogue One? Donny Yen played pretty much the same character in that. The Honest Trailer video even noted it.
Both were likely inspired by a blind swordsman character named Zatoichi from over two dozen movies and a TV series from the 1960s-80s in Japan. He's a fun character because he's always underestimated.

i know it's entertainment and all that, but my mind is wired in such a way that i can not accept a blind person is capable of doing the things that they do in those movies. or those jet li shaolin warrior flicks where he's kicking ass with 5 seconds of hang time.

maybe one day they'll make a movie with donny yen playing a blind goalie who wins the vezina trophy for the anaheim ducks.

That's fair, but realistically it's not that big of a stretch.

There are blind people that have taught themselves to use echolocation to see their surroundings.
