I kind of wish Deady was here, just so we could be witnessing his heel turn on Torts now that he isn't part of the organization in real time.
Well, Torts was never really a players coach anyway. You can't have that kind of coach nowadays and expect to get the best out of your players. On top of that, he wasn't good for the offense and only cares about defense. Look at players like Farabee and others. They had some great years and once Torts got here, they stagnated and didn't develop any further.

Oh no, TSN has already written an article speculating that Tocchet could be on the Flyers' radar.

:help:
See Torts firing and hoping Maybe Briere will be different

When you see Tocchet mentioned and knowing flyers retreats are coming.

The flyers will never be good until there is an enema getting rid of extra ex flyer under the sun in the f/o.

Ultimately his time here was completely pointless.

Can't see him get another coaching job in the NHL after this, and he probably doesn't even want another job either.
He'll probably go back to being a TV analyst. He has the charisma and the old school grumpiness to be entertaining enough in that capacity.

The whole "bring respect" and "know what it means to be a Flyer" shtick completely flopped. I think the team had more of an identity under Hak and Fletcher tbh.

Torts set this team back as if that was even possible

Tocchet is definitely the odds favorite, esp if Jones is involved.

Thats kinda whats interesting here. Does Danny get to pick his guy or is it a group decision?

Nice piece of news to wake up to, although I agree that the timing is weird.
It feels like a thing to celebrate, but that will come to a screeching halt if the next coach they hire is more-of-same. That would include Tocchet, much as I liked him as a player.

Think I'm in the Carle camp, but we'll see if the FO can step up and show us some freaking vision for once.

Reactions: Flyer lurker
Let me make a statement on what a joke the NHL is as a league as a whole. I tried to find live reaction to the Torts firing. Nothing on the NHL US tv rights channel ESPN. Understandable. That channel ignores hockey in general, good job Bettman on picking an outlet to expand the leagues visibility. I’m sure the NHL network has something. Nope. Reruns of last nights recap show over and over followed by game replays. Way to run a tv channel to generate conversation about the league. I noticed that NFL network had live shows during their offseason. Keep putting teams in the Southern US to increase your market share Bettman. Telling people your a hockey fan is kinda embarrassing.

If you were this close to firing him, did you really have to move Frost?

I understand Farabee with the neck - but it’s just another thing with weird timing.

I just can’t get behind it. He should have been fired this off season, not risking the beautiful draft position they currently have. A new coach boost would be the worst possible outcome.

The more I think - I refuse to believe that they fired him on their own. No way Briere has the balls or gravitas to drive a decision like that.

Here is the bottom line in my view. I knew before he even coached a game when he hired that he was full of crap. When he was spewing on about the locker room before he even stepped foot in it. Not only is he not a good coach, he hasn't been for a long time. He has no clue how to handle the modern day NHL athlete or how to develop young skilled talent. His systems and style of play are antiquated and obsolete. On top of that he is as a person and as a coach. Disingenuous, dishonest, manipulative and deceitful. While I won't say he is in the realm of a criminal or a truly evil person. He is in the realm of "regular" people, not a good guy. He after all the talk of how the team needs to get younger and take a step back. All of the "we're in this together" and we have to go through the process and all of that similar talk to paraphrase, quit on this team and didn't want to coach the team through it. It is after all, all about him and his legacy. He quit on the players who busted their asses for him and busted their bodies blocking shots. That's the kind of guy that he is. When it comes down to it, he is not a good guy. This is not a firing. He manipulated the decision and forced the firing. It's another indication of the poor decision making by the Flyers and how they hitched their wagon to this guy. He had Hilferty, Jones and Briere completely fooled. Most observant people not among the gullible facet of the fanbase saw it, including myself,

I think the quote obviously played a role here. Also, the exit interviews had to have been a horrifying prospect to the Jones and Briere. Feels a lot like damage control, but it had to happen and i'm glad it did

Looking back that little speech he gave about "being a Flyer" definitely was a red flag. At the time I thought he was just being excited about getting another opportunity in the NHL.
Insinuating that the players lack the commitment probably wasn't the best way to introduce himself to the team either.

Curious if the next guy will be a defense first fellow.

Not since Laviolette has there been someone that didn’t have defense first spewing out of their ass.

I got a text from my wife letting me know. Good riddance. I don’t care it was done now. Some say they should of waited until the end of the season. But I wonder some players went to Briere and asked to make a change.
Torturella quit on the team after the last game. His comments were his resignation. He admitted he's not up to the job, so get rid of him now.

So has it been confirmed if he’s gone entirely or not? I’m just getting my work. So haven’t really dug deep on this so far.
Briere’s statement left the door open in it’s phrasing but it’s a lot more closed than I expected.

I think he very likely is gone completely. They could have said it was mutual among other things but they didn’t.
