Confirmed with Link: John Tortorella relieved of his duties as Flyers coach. Brad Shaw to take interim charge for now.

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

Even if it doesn’t. The risk is there.

Comcast just couldn’t handle the negative, and more importantly negative national media attention from his comments - and this late season free fall.

Such a corporate dogshit franchise.

Fire him sure, but get your top pick - and then do so. What was the point of doing this now?
Because he would have continued to bench and scratch young players who then would take the Cutter Gauthier route of leaving the organization. This makes it more likely that the Flyers will keep guys like York and the other ones we would have like Gauthier, Frost Farabee if this douchebag was in charge.

Par for the course.

Right move, odd timing. Why do it now? We don't need any kind of new coach recovery with the third overall pick on the line.
What happened is that they realized that this is what his mentality has been for a while, and that just cannot be good for the culture

Briere deserves no respect. Torts basically had to force him into firing him. Torts had to be so stupid, so blatant publicly to get his ass canned. It's possible if he kept his mouth shut, Briere would of kept him next season.
Exactly, that's the correct read on this situation. Tortorella bailed on the team and quit and forced them to fire him. Before that, there was no chance he was getting fired. Putting Briere as the face of the decision is just PR

I think it's conjecture to think that Briere made this call on his own. It's not made if Jones and Hilferty were not in agreement. Tortorella basically publically declared that he was not interested in coaching a team in the Flyers current position. He gave them little choice. Again, the overwhelming theme to can be drawn from all that has happened this season, including the trades of Farabee, Frost and Laughton, as well as firing Tortorella. Is not that that the Flyers have vision for foresight. It's that they again had to admit and realize and correct course on another failed plan and strategy. Now the question is will they learn from and move into the modern day NHL? Doubtful. Time for another cycle of incompetence. Bottom line is that the entire tenure of Tortorella, the spiritual advisor of the team, was a complete and abject failure.

They have a handful of games left.

Unless he did indeed quit himself, I’ll maintain it was dumb.

For a rebuilding team the draft position is most important these idiots always choose PR, and optics.

Just a reminder.

Its all Hextall's fault we hired Torts. It has nothing to do with Flusher hiring or Briere retaining until today.

Wouldn't be surprised if some of the RFAs refused to negotiate. Already lost Frost and Farabee, to lose Cates, Foerster and York too?

There is little doubt Briere had to get the ok from “Hilf” and Jones. Otherwise, this would have been earlier IMO; they probably spent the last 24+ hours internally going over what they should do. Wonder if the Senior Advisors were consulted ( I say that half kidding)? I also believe some players went to Briere or Jones or “Hilf” to voice their displeasure currently. Management was pushed into this decision. 100% not something they wanted to do.

Do we even know this was really Danny’s call or idea? Maybe Jones or “Hilf” made the call.
