He’s doing what any coach does. I don’t get the fuss, but I rarely do with Torts. Even if they lose this was one of the more impressive turn arounds for a team after a coaching change I’ve seen.

People just want to hate the guy. He’s a good coach. He’s not for everyone but he’s proven once again he has a place in the league.

It's not like you can say 'well Torts know his goalies better than anyone', he does not. He's barely been there. This isn't "his team", he was flown in last minute at the conclusion of the season. He's going purely on vibes with the goaltending situation. Whatever spark he gave seemed to work, but he does not have a long and successful coaching tenure across his entire body of work.

Agreed. He's an excellent coach, but this stuff is so unprofessional.

I don't know if he's the kind of guy who motivates himself by cultivating a "Me against the World" attitude, or if has some sort of weird complex about lowly sport journos intruding upon the holy circle of Hockey Men. Either way, it reflects poorly on him. Most of the other coaches don't like the media either, but they're professional enough to answer questions respectfully. Especially completely reasonable questions like this one. It costs nothing to just say "No, I'm not considering a goaltending change".

And I don't buy the idea that he's doing it to put himself in the line of fire and take on media criticism. Maybe that's how he rationalizes it, but all he's doing is adding fuel to the fire and creating unnecessary drama around a goaltending situation that's pretty uncontroversial.

I can imagine Torts saying some variation of:

"Look, I'm just a tough kid from fill in the blank who had to scratch and claw for every ounce of respect. Nothing's guaranteed and I make no apologies if I rub people the wrong way. I call it like it is. I answer to God, my family, and teammates who are like family. Everything else is just noise."

Which generally just translates to:

"I'm an asshole."

But he isn't doing what any coach does. Most coaches don't insult a journalist for asking a reasonable question. It is possible to defend a player without being a dick, at least it is possible for most coaches.

If Vegas loses the series, Torts will be thinking about his failed coach's challenge in Game 2 over goaltender interference for a long time.... it resulted in a penalty and a PP goal for Carolina, helping them salvage the game... and maybe the series.

I mean, of the 5 teams he's coached for (not counting Vegas so far), he is above average in length of tenure for 3 of those 5. Only 2 - Vancouver and Philadelphia - were below average.

But even then, it's inaccurate to say that as far as NHL coaches go he doesn't tend to have a long shelf-life. As you said, if anything he's average compared to other coaches.

People need villains. People want Torts in the same bucket they put Babcock, it’s just not the truth. He’s doesn’t belong there. He’s a jerk to the media. That’s really it. Occasionally yelling his message in the locker room. He’s pretty benign for the rep he has. He turned that team around. Quick. They’ve gone a lot further than most expected, and looked good doing it.

This. People don't realize just how bad Hill has been the past 2 years. They do no get through Utah with Hill in net. They probably wouldn't have made the playoffs if Torts hadn't stapled him to the bench as soon as he came on.

He is getting criticized for how he treated a media member. That was not the norm for coaches. It has nothing to do with trying to make him the villain and everything to do with how he acted.
