John Tortorella ejected 10 minutes into game, refused to leave (upd: fined $50k and suspended 2 games)

How much you wanna bet Wes fired off an angry email to Stephen Walkom, and Walkom fired of an email to Daly about the "compromising of the integrity of officiating as a whole".

Now that's the kind of shenanigans I'm here to see. A coach trying to either force the bouncers at the bar to deal with him or call the cops and escort him from the premises is kind of stupid to cheer for... I would have much preferred he walked out on the ice and start kicking like baseball managers to get his money's worth.

But John Tortorella yelling things between the glass and passing notes from the first row on his suspension days would double down in a way that cracks me the f*** up. Imagine your season tickets get crashed by the coach of your team and you keep hearing him mutter under his breath and vent the whole game, I'd pay extra to get that seat.

Here's a question: does getting a penalty that would forfeit the game come with additional financial/suspension related punishments?

If not, he'd have made a way more hilarious statement by coming back to forfeit a blowout and being given roughly the same punishment

That's the kind of thing that would make national headlines and I'm pretty sure the NHL would make the punishment more severe if he had to be carried out of the arena. haha

I want him to starfish at center ice and say "take me you bastards"

Most of those kids reffing do it because they love the game. There is a shortage of refs in Canada, mostly because of garbage like this. Everyone I reffed with had some kind of horror story with a player/coach/parent. Torts should know better/do better.

Yep, hockey parents are the worst and there are more than a few on here.

I don't get the love for Torts on here. The guy is a selfish little bitch. Always has been. Eventually his act will get old and he will get the boot in Philly.

Guy is clearly skilled hockey coach except his giant ego gets in his way.

I'll be honest: this is a people problem more than a Torts problem.

Don't get me wrong, when you know a coach's name and how he's going to act on reputation you're definitely dealing with an ego, but him doing it at the professional level coaching professionals is not the same as being a role model for parents. I have no inbuilt love for Tortorella, probably dislike him more than I like him, but him taking these actions in a professional game he's getting paid for is not the same as parents in the stands and it shouldn't even be related.

Kids should look up to hockey players, but the parents don't need to look up to hockey coaches (and are adults who should arguably not need to be enabled like that in their child's sporting events either way)

The people who do that are probably gonna do that whether the NHL has top tier decorum or not.

Just to clarify, my statement about hockey parents and Torts being a selfish bitch were not connected.

I don't like how people treat refs particularly in U16 hockey.

I also think Torts is a giant ego manic, who cares more about himself than the team - see Vancouver tenure.

Parents in youth sports is like a tale as old as time... It's going to happen with self-important shitheads.

The weird reality is that there are way more self-important shitheads at that level to the point where every young referee has to deal with them and they're just a region-locked cog in a machine getting some extra ice time for pay.

Torts is an ego-centric coach for this level but teams also hire him because that ego either deflects from or builds towards an attitude they want, and that's worth something. He's a heatsink at times and comfortable doing it because he always has and it hasn't damaged his career much, if at all.

Torts isn't fully in the wrong for what he's doing because he's doing it to well-compensated professionals. He's still wrong, mind you, to the tune of a suspension no less but he's not going as far as youth hockey dad. Youth hockey dad is not Tortorella and doesn't get the same leash. I recognize that you get the difference but I felt like it should be said one more time in case I accidentally enabled one of those shitheads.
 
I think that if Torts channeled all of that toddler-energy into coaching his team well they might have made the playoffs this year.
 
How do you guys still blindly support these officials? If you have a problem with Torts it’s you that keeps these awful refs employed.

I guess it couldn't have worked out any better for the show for Torts to get kicked out during the Tampa 03-04 cup celebration seeing as the Flyers were getting blown out anyway. His old players got a good chuckle out of that one.

I don't know what was said exactly, but kinda lame for McCauley to throw him out during a night that was emotional for Torts as well. Just give him a warning and move on.

They don't need to look up to hockey coaches, but bad hockey parents do, that's the issue. So, NHL coaches have to set a better example.

I'd say those bad hockey parents aren't saying "the pro's do this so it's okay", they're just shitheads taking things too seriously.

Let's take this the other way: the NFL and NBA have fairly stricter guidelines on coaching behavior compared to the NHL and MLB, to varying degrees. I'd say the NBA is probably "strictest" due to proximity to the fans and anybody doing what Tortorella did here or walking out on the court to cause a scuffle would be seen as a shithead. A lot of these guys (across all of the sports) get ear time because, get this, it's their job. Makes no difference, parents of athletes can be f***ing assholes no matter the sport. There's not a famous chair-throwing, tantrum pitching tennis coach I can name off the top of my head but that's very likely not stopping overbearing parents just because they don't have a role model.

Anybody, in any sport, who thinks they're one of the coaches just because they identify with and want to personify their favorite professional sports manager, coaching adults and not children is a complete and utter f***wit.

Everybody should try to set an example, so even when they fail in the moment an NHL coach's behavior is not an excuse for others to do the same thing but worse.

What they don’t give a f*** about is your uneducated opinion.

And trust me, players are the same way.
2,hours after the game they have moved on. It’s just fans that live each game well into the night and even the next day.
