John Tavares the Man the Myth the Legend

I don't think JT is too concerned about making too much money anymore...if he could keep playing as a Leaf by taking a significant paycut, he will...he's already made his millions on his last contract...I think he's also buying some goodwill with the organization when he retires, as he could also work for the Leafs then.
Agree, they could offer him those deferred deals where his salary is like 6mil/yr but caphit is like 3mil.

Question is do the Leafs want to bring him back as they need to change culture and JT is a huge chunk of the current culture problem

With how vocal JT is about staying I think they keep him. I'd rather they move on personally, but I bet they squeeze him and play him as the 3C.

Knoeing the Leafs they won't squeeze him enough and will still give him over 4M.

I think they'll go after Bennett as the 2C if Florida doesn't resign him. Even though he doesn't put up a ton of points we see what he does in the playoffs. I think he will also compliment Nylander well. Nylander's biggest issue is he gets a bit scared. Bennett will help with that.

$3M or less please !!! Any more than that ... bye bye John.

IMHO, he's been overpaid for a few years now, especially since he was unable to lead our Leafs to at least an ECF.

If he's making ridiculous demands, I'd just show him his playoff numbers and ask him since he has basically been overpaid by 3-4 mill a year, why he feels the need to try and win another contract negotiation. At that point, I'd offer him league min and tell him "you had the same number of points as 1.7 mill Bobby McMann your last 9 playoff games, take it or leave it"

Would be fitting for John to let us down one last time, for old time's sake like he did every year he was here.

I can see $5 million for 3 years. With the expectation that he needs to realize he may not be on the PP1 anymore and may fit into a more of 3rd line centre / face off specialist role

Nylander and JT don’t seem to be a good fit

He'll be back. And I think he takes a very sweet contract to come back as well.

Like 3-4.5 a year for 2-3 years.

He bleeds blue and white. Wants to win here with his family. He has already made his money.

It will happen.

The "we took the Panthers, the cup champs to 7 games, and look how they are beating Carolina"

Reminds me of the respect in the handshake line quote.

Same cringe stuff that Dubas and Shanahan would hang their hat on each year.

These guys definitely appear to be puppets to someone in ownership. New people but same messages.

that doesn't sound like a $5m player, especially on a 3 year term

Losing 6-1 at home in games 5 and 7 tells the real story. They may have been 1 game away but the gap between the two teams is as large as Lake Ontario. Winners win and losers lose. 16, 34, 88, 91 and 44 are losers plain and simple. How much more proof is needed for those in denial?

Take $4.91m x 3 and the fans may cut you some slack (except for hotpaws).

He scored 38 goals last year and on the open market that will get you 7-8m. Anything starting with a 4 is a win for the Leafs IMO. They were talking 7 before the playoffs. Can't say I did not say to wait until the playoffs and it will cost less.

They need to find a better #2C. With JT at #2LW or #3C, they should be stronger.

A shame they traded for a bottom 6 Laughton when they should have traded for that #2C at the TDL.

Numbers aside, his career has shown that he's not a winner and he doesn't deliver in the playoffs. I think we move on from him if the goal is to win a Cup.

Tend to agree but he is not a loser like the 3 amigos who are in their primes. At the right price and in the right role, I'm in unless you can find better value for the money. This guy truly wants to be a Leaf and the Leafs want to keep him. He's staying IMO.

Keep Tavares for the right price and term. No brainer. If we can shift him to wing or bump him down to 3C I think it will benefit him. He needs the right kind of linemates too, just dont see the fit with Willy.

I'd rather have marner than tavares and I don't like marner he needs to take a low ball offer you hear me

I'd prefer to keep him too, but not at the $$$ he'll command. Tavares almost scored 40 goals this season, and is our only net-front guy besides Knies. If he's a bargain I don't see why you wouldn't keep him. This is all about getting more depth, in my opinion, so our bottom 6 can provide meaningful production like it does for Florida.

what in his career subjects he isn't the biggest ''loser'' of the core four ?

and regardless of the price tag why would anyone want him based on hic playoff performances

Should have said he is not as big a loser as the 3 amigos who are in their prime and should be the alpha dogs.

Somebody will pay him and Marner. They will ignore playoff performance just like Tre has with 34 and 88. Hell he offered Marner $108m and Marner is the biggest playoff choker of the 4.

JT was no less a loser than he is now when he was in his prime !

I have no idea why regardless how poorly he plays he gets a pass and all his teammates get shit on , like i said before it's been going on since he was in jr 20 yrs ago

You are right Tavares gets a pass while his teammates get shit on. Perhaps it is because his teammates are some of the most unlikeable players to wear a Leafs jersey. JT still has some goodwill from the fan base. The 3 amigos have used theirs all up. Marner 6 years ago with his contract negotiation and disappearing act in the playoffs IMO.

JT battles on the boards, willing to play in front of the net. He has some toughness.

Correct. At the right number and role, he can be a solid supporting piece. At their cap hits, the 3 amigos need to be the lead dogs. Nylander was for 8 games. Matthews and Marner were toothless chihuahuas.
