John Tavares the Man the Myth the Legend

Perennial underperformer in the playoffs, he was a ghost against tougher opposition. I don't even want him back for $1m per year.
Get this sleepy old man off my team please.

Leafs need a 2C. JT can move to LW if they are going to keep him. Can still take draws and probably produce on the PP but it's not using him correctly at C going forward.

He can stay at a discount cost.

Posted this in the gdt, but my read from this is Tre likely takes a bit to assess potential alternatives.

But there really aren't many centres available. And the Leafs still also likely need a 3C. I'd wager he stays due to lack of alternative options this free agency

Look at it this way. He left NYI and they went to 2 conference championships. Let him leave and maybe that works for Leafs.

Hes won nothing. He couldn’t lead World Championship to a medal. He was hurt during the Olympics but got a gold for being on the team. Got a gold in the World Cup.

Maybe we try something else? Maybe a guy with some wheels who can play with Willie?
JT did f*** all in the playoffs so I don't really care about him being a ppg guy in the regular season.

I’m thinking 3x3… he’s retiring a Toronto Maple Leaf.
At 3 million… he’s Mr. Hometown Discount Johnny Toronto.

People speculating Tavares will sign for Spezza-type money are loco. I'd say $7 million per is the starting point. If that's too rich for the Leafs, he'll go elsewhere. He might take a bit of a haircut to stay, but not that much.

My guess would be 3 x 6.5-7 personally. Free agency isn't that great and your likely losing Marner. You only have Cowan really coming up, and you have no picks to trade. Unless the team plans on risking missing the playoffs every year with no picks, then they'll probably have to keep some of these guys around.

If he leaves we have 2 huge void at centers.. There is nothing to replace him with.

I'd be willing to either give him a huge 8 year with lots of deferred salary and all to keep caphit <3.

I can live with a 1 year 6.5-7M contract.

Whenever I see references of Berube saying "100%" I'm like what else is he supposed to say? Say something like nah we don't want them back we'll pursue better players??

On a seperate note I don't mind JT back on an extremely team friendly deal. As others have mentioned we could use some centre depth.

LeBrun on Overdrive saying last summer the Tavares camp told the Leafs they were willing to extend at $5m AAV.

Doesn't think that cap hit is now available. Speculates that Tavares being so adamant in his desire to want to stay in Toronto plays into the Leafs favor, as it hurts JT's leverage.

The problem for JT is that the rest of the league saw what Stamkos turned into after having an amazing (even better than JT's) season coming into Free agency. They will not want to be anchored by anything with $7M in it.

Theoretically, behind Matthews and a 2C he could eat easier matchups. I don't trust him to be the type of guy to elevate in that situation though. Maybe if we got much better 3rd line wingers. With newfound cap space with Mitch leaving and Tavares taking a discount it could be done I suppose. But I'm more than happy to let him walk and start a real culture shift.
